how to remove silicone rubber bands for biocube

Please help me. I bought a used biocube of unknown age (version 2 I think, Oceanic) and I just discovered that I CANNOT REMOVE THE SILICONE RUBBER BANDS IN ORDER TO CHANGE OUT THE LIGHTS.
I've tried using a wire hanger, small screwdriver and NOTHING budges the silicone bands. What can I do? I can't find anything anywhere on the internet about this problem. If I can't replace the lights I might as well junk the tank.
I'm afraid I'll break the lights and cut my hands.
thanks in advance!
