really I thought you could do a convict tang
A convict tang grows to ten inches. Besides size, most tangs need plenty of room to swim. That is not to say that you could not get a tang though. You would need to keep your aquarium lightly stocked and the water parameters pristine. A smaller tang, such as a Kole, would do fine for a few years. There may come a point when the fish outgrows your tank though. It is best to upgrade to a larger tank prior to purchasing a tang. Many people buy them with the intent of upgrading, and that never happens. A tang does best with a mature system containing plenty of growth for grazing. If the system is new then you have plenty of time to decide your stock list. It is important to be patient and stock slowly.

I am trying to house a new born Banded Cat Shark in a 75 Gallon for about 4 months while my new tank gets ready. That being said, it seems like the darn thing has grown in the last week! She eats like you wouldn't believe...
Seriously, I don't think I would be able to get from birth to 6 months in my 75 Gallon. Luckily I will have the 250+ gallon very shortly so I can transfer her.
If you want to get any time with your shark before he gets too big, I think 150 gallons would be a bare minimum...

Actually it would depend on how wide the 75 gallon tank is compared with the 55 gallon.
Typically 55 gallon tanks are only about 12-13" wide. So Really they kind of start becoming a bit cramped for a small shark - when the shark reachs about 9-10 inches.
On the other hand - if the 75gallon is basically like a slightly wider 55 gallon. Then it may be 48"long x 18'wide x 20' tall. Which would definitely be better for a small shark for the first 4-6 months. This way - a 75 gallon tank would easily be capable of holding a small bamboo, eppie or catshark until it at least 12" long.
