bamboo shark

Ok guys I have a question what is the best size tank for a bamboo shark I have seen everything from 100 gal to 300 gal your help is very much appreciated.

Welcome to the board!!

Fundamentally, this is a question not really of tank volume but of tank dimensions.

But most people say that the tank size is around 180g. A standard 100g is really not going to be suitable for long term care of this shark.

thats what I was thinking I have been studying this for a while now and can not come up with a sold answer I have a 123 gal do you think that would work?

125 gal not a 123

Unfortunately, a 125 gal. tank would not be sufficient.

Bamboo sharks can reach lengths upwards of 40".

Personally, if this is a standard 125, no, it is not suitable for LONG TERM care of this shark. Short term care yes, but I don't recommend buying them with the idea that you may get a larger tank in the future.

is there a reason why so many different sites/book/people differ on the size of the tank?
We'll, first there is the question "are they trying to make money on this?" If so, the tank size tends to be smaller. More people have smaller tanks. So more people can be convinced to buy them.

Other information may be old and outdated. And others may just have different personal opinions. But if you consider the shark gets somewhere around 3 feet long, it is clear that it won't be able to easily turn in many of these smaller tanks.

ok that makes sense thank you much so are you saying a 180 is ok then??
it also depends on the type of bamboo shark you get. not all grow to the same size some do require larger systems that others.the smallest system requirments i have found so far for some types is 180 others may state 300+ make sure you research that species b4 purchasing if you dont have what it requires at full grown yet just be aware of what it will need and be ready to upgrade before it gets to big for his surroundings

ok will do been reading a lot making sure i pick the best for my new tank im also looking at eels mostly like will go in this direction since my tank is only a 125 gal
post #12 of 27
eels would be smarter.. but again you wont want to go with any of the very HUGE species of eel as it could be to small for some.. if you go the shark route i would suggest if you keep it in a smaller tank purchase filtration for a 200+ gallon tank and heaters and lights and even extra sand and rocks and all so when it comes time to upgrade all you need is a larger tank and stand.. it'll help on the costs at least.. anyways good luck!

IAHAWKEYES where are you located? I am in the Quad Cities. Just curious.

everyone flames me when i give info on sharks but i will give you the "basic" info. i can tell u that a 125 is not good enough. if you consider that the smallest kept shark exceeds usually 2ft. though i do not know if any of u guys kept pygmy dogfish which i think grow to a max of 6inches. having a 2ft shark stuck in a 6ft long thank won't cut it. how would you like it if YOU were stuffed in your closet. these are "non-active" sharks but we are basically "non-active" humans who spent hours on the couch, computer, you name it.

Not to start an argument... but IMO I really dont think sharks think like us. Being crammed in a closet like you reffered to. Yeah it would suck for a shark to be in a 125g tank, but I dont think that they think about being crammed or clostraphobic (sp?). Now, I really dont think you can put a Bamboo in a 125g, but I am just saying that if you did (not reccomended), then the shark would live... just not thrive. So if you dont really care about the shark, then you go right ahead and get a Bamboo shark. Nobody is stopping you...

i care about every single living thing. every animal has a purpose on this earth. and that is to live a happy life and do there job. you MUST think in other's prespective as well. how would YOU feel if you were suprisingly stepped on? or how would YOU feel if someone just shot u? i don't kill a bug with a fly swatter the second i see it. i take it outside in a piece of paper alive. i just can't see why people kill things for no reason. now you're thinking, why do we eat meat? well there's another reason why animals were put on this earth. for other animals to live. i just can't see why people do these things.

hey it wasnt a bad analogy though.. he was really only tryng to make a point.. and his info was by no means wrong or off in the slightest.. he's done his research.. and i think he deserves some credit for that..?

Do what things? I never said I have a shark. And I would never put one in a 125g tank. I am just saying that I dont believe that sharks think like us. I dont think that they get clostraphobic... Sure they would be crammed, but they wouldnt just die over it. I didnt do anything wrong... and I never said that I dont care about the animals. But you are making it sound like I am saying that I dont care. When I do. So please read carefully before you post.
