How do you know that? Is there a test for that? I've never seen one.

You people are scaring me to tears...I dreamed last night my tank bowed out and burst and I spent the night trying to save my critters.

Now some chemical I never heard of. So what horrible fear do I worry about now..what is it and how do I know if I GULP, have a problem. Please don't tell me it comes from little aluminum pieces of frozen fish food containers

Flower...Flower...Calm down...As long as you have been in this hobby, you should know that if there is a problem WE would know it...as much as we stare at our tanks...I can tell right away if something is out of place or wrong as I am sure you can too...

I had nightmares last night about my tank breaking. It was bowing out and I had the rim trying to hold it together and yelling help! help!, next thing I know I couldn't find all my fish, just a few of them because the explosion of water spewed them everywhere.

I had read a post about a 300+ tank bowing out and leaking yesterday, I didn't think it even bothered me. I just really felt sorry for the guy. Menopause again? Most women just worry about hot flashes., not me...I got a fish tank!

How do we know if some weird toxin is lurking in the tank? Some poor fellow just posted about his fish looking all stressed for no reason. Losing the color and acting strange. Stuff like that happen all the time.

If you tank has not been ruuning for a while (more than 2-3 years), than you do not have to worry about this.

Hey loco, is this a rhetorical question or are you exeriencing a problem? Asking because I am of the firm belief that people have had this problem, but how would they know specifically that was the problem.

That was my point to asking. I wanted to know how people have experienced this problem. How they figured it was hydrogen sulfide. I have been doing some research, and most readings tend to make it as it doesn'e really happen in the home aquarium. I mainly want to hear what people here have to say about the subject.

I suppose then that you have read Dr. Holmes-Farleys article. If not google

Hydrogen Sulfide and the Reef Aquarium

I actually started reading that today. Thanks for the reference.

Its is a very rare condition in the home aquarium but it can happen as the result of sever oxygen depletion. The warning sign is the smell of rotten eggs

Yeah see that is what I have been reading. That it really does not happen in the home aquarium. What levels are leathel to fish? And at what levels would you get the "rotten egg" smell? Could it be that in some cases it is released in small amounts and can't be smelled and possible be high enough to kill fish? Could this explain some unexplainable sudden deaths of fish?

if your nightmares are only of your reef tank crashing then be thankful...
life is good!

If you want to really do some research on how hydrogen sulfide can occur in our tanks may I suggest you investigate, External carbon-driven di-nitrification filters? Our sand beds are also a souse of hydrogen sulfide look into how it is not a problem until the hobbyist unknowingly STIRS their sand bed to try to eliminate the black areas within
