Carnations like the dark and lots of water flow. Be it a tiny frag or a giant it feeds the same way. A cave is best with the water flowing over and around it to carry food to it, and take waste away.

ive got it on the bottom of the tank now, in direct flow and in almost direct light. getting it good flow and no light might be hard... i'd assume the light is more important in this case since i can always spot feed and clean it..?

It won't open in the light and will starve no matter how much you spot feed it. Do you at least have an overhang cliff you can put it under?
I put a #1 Koralia directly on my chili coral which requires the same care as a carnation. So if you can adjust your power head to a cave or overhang the coral should be okay. You can't spot feed it enough without polluting the tank for everything else, it must have a constant water flow over it.

As long as polyps are out and feeding, you are doing great with it...
My new chili frag finally came around but the polyps (tiny stars) look off white not the bright white my last one had, but it s loaded with them. My last one as 4 Xs the size of this one. I got smart this time and hung it upside down in the cave, my last one got buried by my goby and it got clogged up with sand before I could rescue it.
