colt coral help

if i get a colt coral and i need to frag it, could i just cut off a few arms and throw them out, or will the thing die if you cut off more than 1 arm, also i know i can cut off the arms and secure them to a rock and they will grow in the tank ,but the reason a ask above is i only have a 29 gallon and i ma only want one coral in there. So my main question is if i cut off more than one arm at a time will the mother coral live?

Yes, the mother coral will live if you cut off several branches...

how many are too many to cut off

If your tank is of optimum conditions, you can cut it just above the base and it will still replenish. In other words, you can cut off every branch and it will live.
