The reason why xenia pulse.

I was thinking last night while I was attempting to sleep... I was trying to make sense of why xenia pulse.

My first thought was: Maybe xenia pulse as a way to regulate their own temperature. The faster pulsing could heat the coral up enough to make them more comfortable....

then I decided to use my arm as a xenia... I put my arm out and 'pulsed' with my hand... what happens? My forearm muscles move and stretch.. tendons allow my fingers to open/close... What if xenia is a muscle and pulsing is a way to help them reproduce quicker? Besides the symbiotic algae within that helps them grow, maybe under right circumstances they pulse quicker or slower to try and spread quicker.

Just a thought... your thoughts?

I think Xenia uses its little “hands” to trap food…or…they just like to dance with joy.

I don’t think they are catching food..food.. But the tiny stuff that can be absorbed from the water column. It does look like dancing with joy…

I read yesterday that it was because it helped to create a current to move particles within the are of the colony.

Isn't that is a fancy way of saying it is getting food from the water column?

[QUOTE=Speg;3259980]I was thinking last night while I was attempting to sleep... I was trying to make sense of why xenia pulse. I've heard of counting sheep, but xenia!!

But then why do some xenia pulse at the store and then never pulse again when you get them home? I have some pink and blue xenia. The pink pulse like crazy, but the blue only once in awhile pulse. They pulsed a lot at the store, but don't now. They are thriving well, have multiplied, but no pulsing.

I can believe pulsing creates enough waterflow through the fronds to facilitate the absorption of nutrients and oxygen. I'd also believe it would assist with the removal of waste.

My guess is that its drawing something in and then expelling it. My Xenia's fingers are feathery which leads me to believe they are used for catching something.
But maybe its a process of absorbing light? When they open they absorb it, then close to process that energy?
Or perhaps they are chatter boxing in Xenia language to each other?
