Hi Guys

If i am taking rocks out the ocean can i just add them to the tank same time or what do i have to do. I live in the islands and they dont sell live rocks.

Rocks from the ocean will have bad stuff that you don't want.  remember the ocean is a lot bigger then a home fish tank.  So just keep that in mind.

LOL...where do you think the fish stores get the rock....from the ocean

If it were me Cayman (or whoever)    I would probably keep the rock in a tub of SW and observe it.....just in case there are "BAD" critters on it

I have to disagree, where do you think the LFS get rock? They don't grow it and don't care whats on it or in it as far as ocean critters.

I would place them one at a time in a bin with a power head and saltwater. With high SG the critters in the rock will come out for a few seconds and you can see what is in there..pick out what you don't want and after just few minutes the critters will return to the rock...if the rock has not been out of water...you are good to go and don't have to cycle

Depends where you live. This guy is saying he lives in the islands, they don't have rules like the states do.

I know the LFS gets there rocks from the ocean.  But, to say the least.  They can filter out all the bad stuff (BAD CRITTERS) you don't want in your fish tank.  Which is where I was going with that.

YUP...that is also why I said I would put it in a tub of sw at first

i would say put the rock out of water for a couple minutes on some kind of rack or something and all the critters will definately come out. its not going to hurt the rock being out of water for a few minutes maybe 10

this is what I have always done, it's worked for me. I only had one bad crab in my tank, and it was the one time I didn't let the rock sit out for long enough.

LOL I have always just sprayed all my LR off with the garden hose and never had any problems.

My dear, if you wash your rock with freshwater from a hose or otherwise, you kill all the critters in and on it. No wonder you had no problems, you had no live rock either. Saltwater only if you want to keep live rock alive.

If you leave your live rock out and let critters "jump off.".you have to cure it before use. The hyper Saltwater method works better. I even had fish live in a hole in the rock where water was trapped for 4 hours, so leaving the rock out is not way to make sure nothing is on it you don't want.

I know the feeling, she does that to me often. I see a question and think "Oooo, ooo, I know this one! I can be helpful!"

I type away, consider my words, spellcheck and voila...only to see she beat me to it......again.....
