What filter should I get?

I have a 60 gallon hexagon tank. It's going to be my QT tank and eventually will probably turn it into a nice fish tank. What filter should I buy for it to keep it up?

Do you want a hang on back....or canister

I have a cascade 700 on my 54G.....I am happy with it...

I know there are al ot of other types, but I can only comment on what I have esperience with :)

I also have a Cascade 1500 on my 225G ....I like that one too

You could use an aquaclear 110 HOB. Just remember DO NOT run carbon when treating with meds. Carbon renders the meds ineffective.

Right. I will not be using any pads (?) when I am using it as a QT, once I convert it to a DT then I will add those pads (?) and will have the proper filtering. I just wnated to know which I should get. And yes, I was looking to get a HOB.

Well, for a QT tank a simple hob filter is good enough...maybe a Marineland filter. But if you're going to turn it into a regular tank after a while then I'd personally go with a canister just for the mear fact that you won't have to look at it hanging off of the back of the tank. I have a couple of Rena canisters that have been reliable (no probs) after a couple of years running. They are very quiet and easy to find media for. Fluvals I hear are descent too. I'f I were to buy another canister though I'd probably try an Ehiem canister.

Yeah....and you can run the canister with nothing in it too.....

Where would a canister go? On the back? Or would this be more plumbing work?
it just sits under the stand. no plumbing really just an intake and return tube that comes with the canister that connect with a intake pipe and return pipe that sit in the tank suctioned to the glass. super easy to set up and clean.

Now I'm VERY interested... especially since you can do it all on your own!

well, in relation to this hobby! haha. If I were to get a HOB then it would be $50-$60... which is CHEAP! A canister would be $140!

You know you're addicted when...you haven't even gotten your first tank up and going and you're already planning another one.

haha, I was thinking the same thing. Infact, I was thinking about how I can manage to find a way to fit another big tank somewhere in my house. I would REALLY like to do an in the wall. And I would be fine with some DIY work there no doubt! haha

Very true... but I just hate spending money on something that hasn't even produced any sort of view yet! I haven't even filled my main 125 G with water yet! I'm waiting for the RO/DI system to come in the mail (AND THE PUMP!!!!!!)! I figured if I make all the big purchases now and get them out of the way then I only have small purchases ahead of me!... sane thought; yes?

For a QT I would get a HOB like a penguin, that way you can run carbon or remove it very easy and you can put that white filter stuff in it and keep good bacteria...being able to swap things out fast is a real plus for a QT. my .02
