"True Grit" is beyond good

I just got home from watching it and I am already planning on seeing it again this weekend. If you are a fan of westerns, or just great movies, you owe it to yourself to see this one.

It is hands down the best western that has ever been made and the best Coen Brothers movie ever made. and that is saying A LOT. it's better than "No Country For Old Men", "O Brother Where Art Thou", "Fargo". It's better than "Unforgiven", "Pale Rider", "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

the acting and dialogue is exactly what would be expected from the Coens. very memorable and funny one liners. the acting is A++ right down to the minor characters.

the gunfight finale is the best gunfight finale that's ever been filmed.

they used the old gospel song "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms" as the entire soundtrack and it is great.

I really can't speak highly enough of this movie, it is that great.

Just watched the original grit again last night. Be interesting to see how Bridges pulls off Rooster. The rest of the movie with the exception of some of the minor characters wouldn't be all that hard to top.

From what I've read the Coen Bro's were reading True Grit the book to one of their kids.  And said holy moly this is right up our alley.  Then they pulled most of the dialog word for word from the book.  And based everything off the book, not a remake of the John Wayne version.   Which should be interesting.  I'll probably watch it over the holiday.  (the nerd won out and I watched Tron II first)  Which was good, but wasn't...

The Duke probably didn't have to do much of any acting in that movie...

You are aware that the Duke won the best actor Oscar for that role right? LOL

gee, do I have to EXPLAIN EVERY THING I joke about to you?

It was a joke saying he (like charlie sheen in 2 and a half men) didn't have to do much acting to play their roles in the film because he was basically playing himself...  That is why he was soo good at it...

I think they were referring to the fact that the character Rooster Cogburn and the real John Wayne were both fall down drunks. It was well understood that you didn't film John Wayne past 11am because he would be too drunk after that time.

Yep, it's that good. the Coens, already 2 of the finest film makers today, have gone over and above themselves with this one. "O Brother" is one of my Top 5 alltime movies and this one is better than that.

and yes, it's good to know you're still alive and kickin and show my face around here once in awhile so everybody knows I'm still alive too. merry Christmas and happy kwanza

Who on earth could they cast to play Katherine Hepburn's role, she was beyond good in that movie.

Got the 10:10 showing tonight.

Thought it was really good as well. I would like to give a __ out of 10, but I can't, for that I would have to rank it compared to another recent films in the same genre, and what is there? (I don't really like comparing films of different decades directly against each other. They're shot for different audiences in different societies). Anything off hand, like 3:10 to Yuma, or The Book of Eli, there's really no comparison, it's way better.

The film itself, Hailee Steinfeld (Mattie Ross) tried to steal the show, but Bridges absolutely nailed the role of Rooster. Some parts could have been a little better, I didn't buy the scenery, at times it felt like we were deep in a forest in the Rockies, then out on some prairie in Kansas in the next scene, then out in some desert in New Mexico. And to be quite frank, I thought Matt Damon only did so-so. Not bad by any stretch, and it was a little bit more of a oddball role for him. But these are just little nuisances in a really great film, and perhaps even help the film achieve a pure Western feel, blending the right amounts of this and that. What would normally be seen as brutal violence, 'fits' right into the film and perhaps, again, harps back to help get an honest Western feel. For example in any of Tarantino's films when you see someone actually getting shot on screen, and/or the shooters face get splattered with blood, it's downright bone-chilling.  Where in True Grit, the cabin scene for instance, after Moon gets stabbed, you're almost waiting for the shots to be fired, and resolve the scene.

I dunno where the movie story is set but if you watch the original it was all filmed in Colorado where you can go from rocky mountains the the plains and even sand dunes in a few hours drive.

If there is one thing I know, movie producers aren't aware of geography.  For instance, if you remember that scene in kill bill, the one where the sherrif is driving up to the church where everyone got slaughtered.  The radio says "el paso" but he's hundreds of miles away from el paso, where that church is set to be.
