Please help me ID the purple hair like algae on the bottom right side of my tank.IMAG0154.jpg

That's not hair algae, or any other kind of algae.  What you have there is red cyanobacteria (AKA "red cyano" or simply "cyano"), which as the name implies is a bacteria.

It's common in newer setups or in setups where there are excessive concentrations of DOC's or phosphates.  Low flow and excessive lighting can exacerbate the situation.

Will it hurt anything? What is the best way to get rid of it.

You should do more frequent water changes....siphon the cyano out frequently...

You may need another powerhead (what size is that tank)...what do you feed and how much?   What do you have for a cuc?   what do you use for filter media?

Agree with Meowzer, and why is your water level so low??

I feed one cube of frozen food a day and algae sheets. my tank size is 75G and my filter media is a canaster filter with you normal media. What is CUC?????

I would drastically reduce the feedings to once every other day and even to half a cube every other day. I would feed a small piece of an algae sheet on the days I do not feed frozen. I would consider adding 1-2 more powerheads. How often do you maintain the canister filter?

CUC=Clean Up Crew snails, shrimp, hermits, crabs, etc

LOl...yeah...why is it so slow....I see filter tubes, but it looks like you have NO top water movement?

what type of frozen do you feed, and what size cube?   It looks like you have 6 fish in there.....IMO a small cube is fine, but do you rinse them first?

do you use tap water or ro/di?

I try to clean my filter every couple of weeks. For my CUC I have around 8 astrea snails and probably around the same amount of cerith snails, one turbo snail, and one cleaner shrimp.

I do have a little top water movment but I guess I not sure how much you need? I food some formula one mysis and San Francisco bay brine shrimp and what do you mean do I rinse them first?

I thaw my frozen cubes in a small cup of water....I then drain them in a small fish net....that is what I mean  :)

ALSO...I definitely recommend more flow for your tank, and more cuc (clean up crew)   look into nassarius snails....they are good sand sifters...for a 75G your tank is really lacking in CUC...you need more snails

what media do you use in the canister?  What size canister filter is it?

What type of water do you thaw your food in. I have a Marineland C-360 canister filter for tanks up to 100 gal. The media in it is on the bottom filter foam then 3 carbon bags, BIO filter balls, ceramic rings, and finally a filter floss pad.

LOL...out of all these questions, I have yet to ask about your water tests..

what are your water parameters?

I just thaw mine in tap water.....some people use tank water, some people use ro/di............

I thaw mine in a small cup of tap water, then dump into a net and rinse under the faucet. that way your rinsing all the water bad stuff away.

I wouldn't use brine any more either. they aren't really good. no nutritional value. Just use the formula one and mysis.

My water parameters are all in the normal range except my nitrates are high and I'm working on getting them down.

Instead of normal...can you give us numbers?   ALSO how about phosphates?

phosphates  I have no idea I don't have a test for that. Nitrite 0, ammonia 0, PH 7.6,( Nitrate 60shrug.gif
