No classified section?

Am I overlooking it?  I thought we used to have one.  I'm selling my entire system and wanted to post it up here in case anyone withing driving distance of me was interested.  Can I just post it here?  Any rules I'm not aware of around selling?

NOPE...has been gone as long as I have been here

Sorry....no selling/trading/etc here

Dude...have you really been gone that long?  Wow.  Like She said, it's been gone for a long, long time.  Nice to hear from you again, though.  I think we're just a few months away from dismantling our tank and selling stuff off, too.

No, I've been here pretty much continuously for 10 years.  I've just been in the aquarium pretty much exclusively for the past few years.  Oh well.  I guess someone will miss out on a great deal.  Craigslist, here I come.

Oh, sry... I guess it's me that hasn't posted much.  I only remember one post from you in months and I think it was in the most recent member pic thread.

It was here when I first joined and was removed a few months later.

Removed unfortunately due to constant abuse from sellers attempting to use the feature to promote their own business.

Wouldn't a post count minimum have solved that for the most part......

Not really.  The people were posting and contributing which led to a decent post count, but obviously selling from a business standpoint.  If there were a way to set up thermos trades again, I think that would really help the forum.  That was very popular.

Even simpler way of answering.... If the board couldn't control the hand full of people trying to turn a profit, back when there was 6-7 active staff members... How in the world are they going to moderate every newb with 1 post trying to sell stuff, with just the 2-4 staff they have now?

I agree that this forum took a hit when the classified section went bottom up, but it was near impossible to manage.  Mods don't necessarily want to spend the majority of our time here focused on policing for seller invaders.

Is there some way a computer guru could set it up so only those with say under 200 posts can't post in that section? The trolls won't hang out that long just to sells some shoes. I would gladly  volunteer my time as a sell and trade section mod...I sit on this site most all day anyway.

They weren't trolls.  Many were active members that posted in many forums here on SWF.  The problem was that they were also professional coral farmers trying to sell goods here.  They had legitimate post counts and contributed to the forum in areas other than the classified section.  Post count wouldn't make a difference.  The mods had to fight with people over whether or not the user was selling as a business or as a hobby.  When someone has a new listing every day, they are either selling as a means of generating income, or they have one heck of a hobby.  It's hard for the mods to police that.  It's hard to prove that one member is selling as a business and the next one isn't.

Oh..I was thinking along the line of sellers like the shoe guy that is always trying to sell his shoes on the site.

What if all classified posts were to get prior approval....one mod has the final decision....they can decide if they think it is a business or a private party. They can check past posts. Post count and so on.all classifieds are sent to the mod..this way the forum can be less monitored...all response to each thread are also sent to a mod....

Actually, it wasn't the shoe sale people; those are easy to detect.  It was hobbyists doing home businesses on the side, actual online hobby stores coming under disguise and posting up items, etc., etc.

That might work if we still had defensio (SWF auto-mod), and defensio was restricted to only the Classified Forum.  However, I don't think that system can be used for just one forum.  Maybe SWF Admin can answer that one.
