I guess I stared something.  Well, if you look outside SWF, how do other forums do it?  Not just other saltwater fish forums which have them but any forum specialized?  My major forums and hobbies these days are my track bike and track riding.  All of the forums have professional sponsors like dealerships and companies that build race parts.  They also have classified sections where we can sell our parts that are the same parts but second hand.  Granted, it's harder for an individual to have their own in house manufacturing of race tires but some so setup their own businesses and sell the same parts where as someone here can have a pretty huge coral farm with a really low overhead.  The rules are pretty simple on those boards.  If you want to sell new parts as a distributor, you become a paid vendor and you sell in the vendor site.  Everyone else can just sell their own personal parts.  You violate the rules, you are banned.

 

I know I'm not a big contributor to this site any longer from a hobby perspective, but having been around 10 years I know a lot of you guys very well.  Not being able to post up what would be a legitimate sale here has forced me to seek out another saltwater board that I have never logged into before and had to create an acount and go to the other board that I have not been on in years.  I'm getting some interest there but with people that don't know me and someone here could be missing out on what is a really good deal.

 

Just something to think about.  I know when we had the classifieds here, I never purchased any livestock from anyone but SWF.com.  Period.  I knew what I was getting with them and if I had a problem, it was always taken care of with no issues.  With that kind of service, the serious hobbiest, which I was at time, understands that.

Some sites seem to have a special forum area just for vendors to post in their own forum area.  But I don't think that most of those forums sites are actually forums within a store like this one is.  Seems to me that if removing the classified section to get rid of unwanted competition chased away a lot of the members then it was kind of counter productive.  It just kind of makes you wonder how much of a problem it really is.  I mean people are almost always going to shop around looking for the better deals for what they're after no matter what.  But then again, this site does seem to have a lot of technical issues compared to most so I'm sure that was a big reason for losing a lot of members as well.  Perhaps I'm missing the bigger picture but I just don't see what the big deal is.  A more active forum would probably bring this site more business IMO.

Personally, I would see such a forum as a plus for the overall hobby forum here, however, since SWF is primarily a store, it is untenable to have people try to milk this site for free advertising and free selling.  Think of going to a LFS and setting up your own stand there to sell your stuff without making any kind of arrangement with that store. No business is going to put up with that. The occasional problem can be handled, but it was daily.

 

Other forums, as mentioned, are not stores.  They set up forums for their own vendors.  I would like to see a vendor forum here and have suggested it.

 

I agree about the lengthy time of getting an operational forum up again.  This occurred as a result of SWF trying to actually offer members a better forum.  The problem snowballed into a major issue when the upgraded VB forum became practically unusable.  A lot of members were lost.  Also, the problems with this new forum has taken some time to iron out, with still the occasional bugs here and there.  We lost countless new members due to the automated mod defensio (you guys should appreciate the flesh and blood mods after experiencing the auto-mod we had bigg.gif )  I have noticed a significant drop in activity on this forum, however, that could also be due to other factors--such as a rotten economy and exit of many hobbyists from the hobby.

 

I hope things will be picking up soon as the issues get ironed out, and as the economy allegedly improves.

Beth, I see your point this being a store.  I'm sure what I wanted to post for sale would have been fine but because of the ones that are not and can't really be controlled, it's just not allowed.  I can't argue with that but it is unfortunate.

Yes, the forum we had was designed for members of this forum who wanted to trade here and there, or sell stuff that they might need to unload.  When I had to take down my reef tank a few yrs back, I posted here on SWF to sell--so, believe me, I know how valuable that service can be to hobbyists.  Unscrupulous folks took advantage, and ruined it for all of us.

i know that their is no classified section anymore, but i was wondering if anyone may know where to look on the internet for used aquariums other then ebay or craigslist

Personally, I would not do a used aquarium online. Too many potential problems associated with that not the least of which is cracks, poor seals, and large shipping costs. Better to maybe let your LFS know you are interested in a used set up. Frequently the LFS will buy a used setup for resale.

I bought a 60g "reef" tank for $300 on ebays one time. I thought it was an amazing deal. Turns out the "corals" he was selling where already sold to someone else and the rock was covered in 100% aptasia. It was soo bad. It was hard to find i small area on the rock with no aptasia.

I sold my 72 bowfront for $700 in 2005 by listing it in the newspaper (as you know Guy, since you helped me out with that). It was around a $3000 investment. It got a good home, but what a bargain for the buyer.
