how can u tell if a cleaner clam is dead

Try and open it.

 

The sniff test works great too.

Usually they open on their own if they are dead....At least that is what I have seen

 

they are pretty hardy though....they don't open like your ornamentals....and when you put it in the tank it will just sit on the sand until it eventually burrows into it
