Picked up my CB Target Mandarin from our FedEx station this morning. To say I'm disappointed about the condition of this fish is putting it mildly. I've yet to see a fish so skinny and still...

A potential employer will usually understand if you ask them to contact your employer only as a final step in confirming your fitness for the job, not as part of a routine screening. We get requests like this all the time, and honor them.
My current employer is really happy with me and we share almost everything. I've told him that I was looking for a different job that payed more - and I ended up getting a raise and didn't have to learn anything new! So - sometimes it's not such a bad thing to mention it to your current employer.

I really don't want them to know anything. Their new policies, and one off decisions have made it abundantly clear that they have no intention of taking care of their employees.
I was really wondering what a potential employer would think if I request them not to contact my current employer at this time. Especially since this job is my only career experience after college.
A lot of potential employers will be understanding if you do not want them to contact your current employer. They should understand that it could make things awkward/difficult for you since you are currently employed with the employer. Do you have relevant references that they can contact?

My experience has been most places won't even try to contact your employer until they've talked to you first and are actually interested in pursuing you for a position. Often times on applications they will ask you if it is ok if they contact your employer. You can always say no and just explain why.
A few years back when I was looking for a new company to work for and I didn't want my current employer to know I had went on a first interview and asked them not to contact my employer unless they were 100% certain that they were willing to offer me the position and that I was willing to take the offer. They didn't end up contact them at all, they just contacted some of my other references.

As long as they are just verifying time of employment and salary history I would let them do it. You could tell them if they make you an acceptable offer on condition of verifying your current employment then you'll grant permission.
