Well it sounds like you can convert to a sump system if you have room under the stand. The in sump skimmers are much better than HOB types. For a sump all you need is a tank under the stand, an overflow, a hose from a return pump to the tank and another hose from the overflow to the sump. (hose in and hose out)
I only have room for a SMALL tank in the left or right cabinet.. This is the stand I have . http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752311

Welll...it looks good. You just may be the first person I know with a worse stand than mine. You can still do a sump...just a tall one.
Acrylic51, 2Quills, and Al&Burke are really good with acrylic, and sump plumbing.... and I bet they can talk you through making a sump that would work for you. Plastic (food usable) tubs, make fine sumps so there are lots of sizes, you just need something that fits and go from there. Al&Burke made an awesome HOB refugium that also housed his HOB skimmer so no microbubbles went in the tank. You might even be able to hire one of them for some handy work in acrylic for you.
