Help with set up ideas

Thread Starter

I am going to start collecting equipment to setup a tank. I want to start with making a tank that will later become my qt tank. Can y'all please help me to figure out the setup i need to get started and reading material that I should get to help figure it all out. I think I want to do a 40 gallon tank with live rock, live sand, coral, and fish. What type of lighting, filtration, skimmer, and is a sump need for this size tank? also what is good sites to buy from price wise and brands

How "later" are we talking, because what I'd recommend will depend on that.  If it's just gonna be a few months, then I'd just go with a HOB power filter, but if it's gonna be your DT for longer, I'd recommend going with a sump.  Of course, the sump is assuming you'll never treat fish in that setup (for many meds, you need to know your exact water volume, and most doses are geared to 10 gal increments).

Also in quarantine tank you won't need sand, live rock, or filters, just a way to move water and spots for fish to hide. There is a lot of info needed for good recommendations. Tank size you desire overall, how many months what kind of tank do you want reef mixed or fish only... this will also determine correct lighting sumps etc....

Excuse me? You already posted this exact question in a different thread. http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/388577/help-with-equipment-ideas You even replied to my answer.

Here is my post again:

You can put a sump on any size tank. I personally recommend sumps, because they hide your equipment and are really easy to maintain. You also have more room for filtration, and increase your water volume.

If you can order your tank from a live fish store, get one with an internal overflow box. It adds a little to the total cost of the tank, but it's well worth it to have an internal overflow box - less worries. You can use an external overflow box if you have already bought the tank. External overflow boxes made by Eshopps are just as good, if not better than any CPR brand I've ever used.

The lighting and skimmer and other filtration devices all depends on what your goals are. Are you wanting to set up a soft coral and LPS reef tank? Are you doing a fish only with live rock system with no dreams to have a reef tank? Are you wanting an SPS dominated reef tank? There are too many options left open... and there's too much information to type up in one thread with such an open ended question.

Go ahead and check out the new hobbyist section of the forum, including the threads about cycling and the 101 tips for new hobbyists. "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Bob Fenner is perhaps one of the most recommended books. You should also get a couple of books on marine fishes and marine invertebrates. As you know, some fish are agressive, others are peaceful. Some fish are reef safe, others are not. It's the same with inverts. Not all fish are compatible with each other. You'll have to research every purchase before you buy.

In a 40g 36" wide tank, you won't be able to have any tangs. Mainly limited to small fish like blennies, gobies, clownfish, and a few other species. You just gotta start readin' and researching as much as you can. I'm here to help. You can PM me if you have any questions, and my e-mail is where the location should be listed.

Now I'm curious if you will copy and post your question again a third time?

40 Breeders are a great size tank.  I have a 30 and its aqua scaped with two islands formations.  mostly LPs & SPS on rocks.  really cool look. prefer it over a wall of rock on back glass.  feel like the fish have more privacy and different areas of tank to explore

Yes I did post in other thread. I then thought new Hobbyists section would be better for this post and did not see a delete thread. I will do my best to keep to minimum post and only post in one area. Thanks for you help thus far Seth

Welcome to the site, and if you need to move a thread, just ask one of the mods to do it for ya.

I'm sorry man, I guess I was having a bad day or something. I didn't see that it was posted in a different forum. That was my fault. Still though, it's better to ask a mod to move a thread than start the same one in a different forum. Many "regulars" including me use the "new post" function, rather than going from forum to forum.

I'll be glad to help any time you need it! Pm me or email me if you want, I'm always around.

I'm not trying to step on your toes, and your right, nonetheless, it's okay to have LR in the QT for the fish and filtration. If and when it comes down to having to copper or hypo one will have to remove the rock.

I have 4 good sized pieces in my QT and the new fish love the hiding areas. I also used the rock to help with the cycle.
