i have recently had a problem with ammonia (it only went up to .25). no other issues with the tank. any idea what this may be, i am concerned?

The markings between the eye and the mouth is normal for a hippo.  You can see this in this picture.

There may be a tad of HLLE beginning around the eye, the base of the dorsal, and perhaps on the tip of the dorsal fins.  That last spot on the dorsal fin may actually be lymphocyctis, which would be consistent with this fish having a bit of HLLE.  I would suggest optimizing water conditions in your aquaria and hopefully that will resolve the issue.

ok thanks for the id, should i be really concerned? ive been feeding garlic soaked mysis shrimp, will this and just making water quality better clear it up?

A steady died of one item will lead to malnutrition, especially for an omnivorous fish. Add algae sheets, and additional meaty and vegetarian foods. This is key to affording HLLE.

+1 on the algae sheets, go to the grocery store and get the sushi wraps they are cheaper also red algae is very good, but this is only at pet stores. Cut into small pieces and roll them like a cigarette this will keep them ripping large pieces off.

Yeah if you let HLLE get out of hand it will cause your fish to die.. trust me and plus it just doesnt look good
