What salinity can I expect to see in a shipping bag holding a fish from SWF?

Fish will be shipped at 1.018.

Well....

That puts a new twist on using the acclimation method described by Saxman here

http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/389218/acclimation#post_3438431

How the heck would one put a fish ASAP into same/lower salinity if the bag water is 1.018. I also understood to read that many shippers of fish use higher salinity to make it more possible to move into lower salinity.

???

I have always dripped my fish from SWF. I have not lost any of the fish I have ordered within the first 3 months.

Thanks Gemmy!

I'll test the bag water and let you know what I find.

Yeah, DOA.

What a beautiful corpse a Flame Angel makes.

Guarantee request made.

Bag water was 1.017 per calibrated refractometer.

I've wanted a Flame Angel since this tank was started. They are a little pricey around here, running from $55-$70.

I used the TOTM gift certificate to buy this one, only paying for shipping. The guarantee doesn't say anything about refunding the shipping charges; if I have to pay shipping charges again, it will make this fish nearly $70. And I would be on the waiting list...again...

If that is the case, I may as well buy one locally and know it is alive. This is why I've not bought livestock online before now.

There will be a Flame Angel in my tank...someday...<whimper>

Yeah, I know what you mean. I can not buy local either due to their prices. For example, they had a yellow tang(small) for 150.00. flaming.gif :( So, I always order from one site online, and I have never had any fish arrive dead. I have ordered every fish I have from there with one exception. My new little b/w clown. I won the tank of the month too, so I thought I would give swf a try. If the fish and stuff arrive bad, credit or no, I will not order from here again and stick with my other place. Again, sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you can find another one soon, they are so pretty, but mine likes my gobstopper polyps lol. laughing.gif

I just got back to work from a quick trip out to FedEx and over to the house. My replacement Flame Angel is happily swimming around the 10g QT!!

I did the normal bag float for temp acclimation, then an aggressive drip for ~20 minutes. It acted a bit dazed when I first opened the bag and emptied

it with the bag water into the bucket (pH swing?), but soon perked back up when tank water began to drip in.

I expected the fish to run and hide when it entered the tank, but it immediately started swimming around checking out the new surroundings; not the least bit timid.

Beautiful fish! I won't claim success until I get back home in 5 hours and see it continuing to swim around, but so far, so good!!

Oh, the bag water was 1.018 salinity.

Sounds like they made up for it.  Cool.  Hope he is in the tank for many years to come.  I love the look of the Flame Angels.

I have a questions though...  When doing hypo to treat a fish I have been told to raise the SG slowly (take a few days to get from 1.009>>1.025).  If SWF is shipping fish at 1.018 and you drip acclimate for even three or four hours that is quite a swing in SG.  Right??  Takes all kinds, I guess.

Well, that question was the one that originally prompted this thread.

After reading several other threads and the references listed in those threads, going back over other material, getting confused and starting over, I decided that the premise that one needs to get the fish out of the bag and into the tank quickly was the one to go with.

I have only bought fish locally until now, so the issue of potential high levels of ammonia in the bag is a new one for me. I can say that local bought fish can also be in lower salinity water and I have had no issues with quick 20 minute drips.

We shall see.....stay tuned....
