If I were you, I wouldn't trust that local fish store ever again. Not only does live rock provide food/grazing places for fish and invertebrates, more importantly, it acts as the best form and the most effective form of filtration there is through nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in aerobic and anaerobic zones. I would also get some live sand for the tank. It does the same as the live rock.
