What fish to place in my 75 gallon

 I know you have heard that there are plenty of fish in the sea....you get to decide what will live in your own little chunk of the ocean....That is the whole joy of the hobby. 

One rule of thumb to help, but not an exact science...do not put fish together with too much of the same diet needs or they will fight for food, or the same body type or color. If you have a reef (CORALS) make sure to ask if it is a reef safe critter. The books I offer you to go get will save you plenty of money and heat-ache...you can even read up on a certain fish you like, then and go online to find it and if your store does not have it, they might order it for you. You want to get fish you really like and if you get one to "make do" it will dictate what you may want to add later...stay away from damsels, unless you want an aggressive tank...they get very mean and kill other fish.

Get this book, and take it to the LFS when you go.

Do you plan on corals?

Are there any fish that you're drawn to/like the looks of? Even if it's a fish that is too large, if you give us some ideas, it's easier to come up with something that might work in your tank. I love suggesting fish, I know, I'm weird, LOL

I got the Marine Fish book b/c I saw someone post it on here. It is so good it tells you everything. The book doesn't let you go buy a fish, and then you realize it is difficult to feed.

thats a great book.i had it at one time.still if i were you i would look through it ,get a wish list together and post it.alot of times fish dont get along but the order of putting them in the tank makes a big difference.the book dont tell you that.

In a book called 101 best saltwater fish species- something like that. It gives a tank size and a suggestion of what fish you could put in there and the order as well and why they should go in that way.

you might want to really watch those tank size suggestions.i dont know that book but i would love to see some suggestions.

Ok, for example the book says for a 75 gallon peaceful aquarium 2 Unarmed Perchlet, 2 Occellaris Clownfish, 3 Yellowstriped Cardinalfish, 1 Minda Blenny, and 1 longnose Butterfly. Or you could do this for a 75 peaceful 3 Yellowhead Jawfish, 2 Chalk Bass, 1 Blue Chromis, 1 Swissguard Basslet, and 2 Royal Gramma.

You can't put two royal grammas together...they will fight...nor can you put a basselet with even one royal gramma. Sorry but your book is off.

LOL...I think Snake already is. I can't imagine a book that would put those fish together, maybe thumpco misunderstood. I hope he/she was not offended, I meant no harm.

Actually, it will mention very little about fish and inverts and goes more into detail about the equipment, methods, problems, and techniques of reef keeping. I'm always looking for someone who wants to take the time to edit and correct mistakes and someone who is a lot 

more familiar with fish than I am. 

Royal Grammas actually can be kept together if introduced together. People are just scared to do it because they're a feisty little fish. However, royal gramma harems are really cool.

That being said, I would not do it in a 75.

 Wow, I learn something new everyday on this site. All my books say keep only one per tank, and never with a basslet. I know in the really big tanks you can even keep two Hippo tangs or dwarf angels...so the size of the tank also makes a difference... as you already alluded to.

I have got two royal grammas in my tank. They have both been in for about 8 months and they do display at each other (open their mouths, like there kissing haha) every once and a while but they generally get along well.

That "kissing" open mouth display is aggression, and it does cause stress. If there is a parasite, like for instance ich...the stressed fish will show signs first and the most likely to die from it. Imagine living in a house with the school bully. He would be there to harass you when you eat, when you venture to try and do anything, and just makes you feel afraid and intimidated at every turn. What a miserable life that would be.

Male bettas fan their beautiful fins when they see another male...it does shorten their lives to place a mirror next to their bowl or another male betta they can see. While the fish can't even get to each other, the constant state of aggression alone is enough to cause problems. people do it to sell them and it makes them pretty...it's just a fish after all.

In a large tank the fish can stay away from each other, but in a small tank they can't avoid each other.
 

They hang out together, side by side. They do that kissing motion maybe once a week. Everyone gets mad at each other, even fish. Aggression can take it's toll but I think it needs to be somewhat constant.

dont be surprised ,one day one might be dead.alot of fish are good for a while like triggers then one day nasty.just keep an eye on them.
