Heater problem?

I bought an el cheapo heater one of those submersible glass ones and set it for 79f. Well, I've been monitoring my water temp with a digital thermometer and it is ranging from 79.4 to 85.6 and varying at different times of the day, not just when lights are on and off. 

 

Could it be my little heater acting up? Should I purchase a new one for greater stability of temp? If I do purchase a new one, could someone recommend me a decent submersible heater that can keep the temp within one degree? Especially in a tank that has about 30g total water volume??

I always get a plastic one because I had fish actually break a glass one. Plastic gets brittle, so after a few years, get a new one...I had an old one break and nuke the tank. You could try an inline heater, you can attach it to any output hose.

I'm thinking about getting one of those titanium heaters with an internal temp guage and an external temp controller... Something fancy.

 

How many watts? 100w, 150w, 200w?

I would get the one that matches your size tank, I had Titanium heaters, they don't rust, but mine got a crust on them from calcium or magnesium build-up. Once they got that hard crust I couldn't get it cleaned, and I got worried it wouldn't give off the heat like it should.

Heater should be part of the maintenance regimen as well as all your other equipment......If your looking for a good reliable heater the always faithful standby would be EboJager......If your wanting a titanium I always prefer that the controller separate from the heating element itself.  That way if 1 of the 2 components would go bad, I just replace the bad component.  When it comes to titanium I'm partial to Jali and Finnex...

Thanks acrylic. I'll price a few things, shop around. I just don't think a six degree swing throughout the day is acceptable. At all. Period.

+1 on the separate controller. I did have my finnex fail within 3 months of purchase so I'm a little sour towards them. Currently, I don't run a heater.

I've been seeing a bunch of mixed reviews on the Finnex as well Gemmy.....I'm thinking I might stick to my reliable Jali that hasn't failed me.....
