Sanitize a water change bucket

Do you need to sanitize your buckets? I use 5 gal buckets from the hardware store and just got an ro/di unit so I want to make sure the buckets are clean. What's the best way to clean the buckets?

I usually wash them then fill them up with water and let them soak for a couple days. most new plastic products will leach plasticines for a while. if it smells like plastic thats what your smelling is the plasticines off gassing (used to make plastics more flexible) generally the more flexible a plastic is the more plasticines it contains.
