Sadly ours died last week (pump malfunctioned and caught fire which had a domino effect of other water issues). He would hop along the front of our 200 gallon tank, loved to race back n forth....

Hi,
You want a sump system....and use the canister for what, just extra filtration? I forget who told me this, but a skimmer should be purchased for the size needed, unlike filters that are better the bigger they are.. A skimmer too large won't skim a smaller tank very well, and too small and it can't skim enough....Unless the skimmer says it's good for 150g - 400g...sell it since it's new, and get one the right size.
I personally think the best canister filter on the market right now is the Fluval brand. I have used Marineland and Casscade, they all work great, but the Fluval was easiest to maintain.
The skimmer has it's own pump, it draws water in and after it goes through the skimmer it pushes the water back out in the same chamber it sits in..it is not a return pump. A return pump is attached to a hose or PVC pipe and feeds back into the main tank. An overflow box (if the tank isn't drilled) with a hose or PVC pipe, leads back down to the sump and drains the water out...the sump return pump has to match the overflow from the main tank so they equally drain and refill simultaneously.

Good info already given.....Is the cube tank drilled or undrilled. Either way I would opt for a sump over a canister filter....Again personal choice, but sump makes life a bit easier over time......As far as a pump for the skimmer....Really depends what type of skimmer your planning on running. Some come with pumps and others need a feed pump to run them....Just depends on the brand/style skimmer you choose.
Ithanks. For the replies is a reef octopus 3000 does not have a overflow box in it it was setup as a octopus tank it has 5 holes drilled in the bottom of the tank with man made live rock stalagmites that have the flow and return gonna have to drill a hole in the back of tank for return just a cool all around tank especialy since it was $200 good deal right or no ? Okay...I'm lost
I thought you said an octopus skimmer, now you call it a tank??? With 5 holes already drilled, why drill more holes in the back, 5 isn't enough? . I'm just going to tag along because I can't figure out what you are talking about.
It sounds like you might be saying you have power jets that are hidden, when you mention live man made rock stalagmites.

the tank was built for a octopus and I have a reef octopus Skimmer and the tank has 5 holes for stalagmites that are about a half inch lfs store said it was setup with a canister and he told me to drill a hole in back of tank to run a sump and return cause it was originally. set up as a closed loop system with. the. stalagmites controlling water flow lol hopefully that explains it lol. thanks

I would reset the tank as it was intended to...ask the fellow to draw you a design or come over and show you for a small fee (pay him for his time). The live rock looking stalgmites where the water flows from instead of power heads all over sound pretty awesome to me.
