Live Rock on Top of DSB

Thread Starter

I have a 4.5 inch deep sand bed that has been established for a few months. When I first put together the tank I placed the live rock on top of the sand bed. I have a few fish and many snails that like to go under the rocks. I am not worried that the rocks will topple, although that has been pointed out to me. In addition, I have been told that the live rock on top of the sand inhibits that ability to Denitrifiy. Should I be worried about either of these issues? I really can't change it anymore, although the rock does seem to have slowly buried itself and is now 1-2 inches deep.

Thanks

It does not inhibit denitrification provided it's a healthy live sand bed.

If you get a critter that digs under the rock it will shift or completely cave in. It will crush the critter and could break the tank.I had a linke starfish do this.  Remove the top rocks and wiggle and push on the bottom rock until it is touching the bottom of the tank....then replace the top rocks.

This is not a perfect solution but it's better than letting the rocks settle by themselves. You have been very fortunate thus far if the rock has already settled down 2 inches.
