If there was an alternative fuel, that would give me the same power output, for a lower price, even at these levels I'd be interested...  But there is not... 

Instead of inventing some new fangled idea, why not make government get out of the way, and let oil companies drill...  Even at 50-60 dollars a barrel, there is enough oil to last our lifetimes...  We have a viable, technology in place, if it weren't for a buncha kooks stopping us...

I have posted the proof of doctored data and the emails the "researchers" used to coordinate false data and discount their own data that proved their models and theories wrong and NASA and NOAA's own sites that shows they have changed the numbers of what is supposed to be historical data. It isn't politics or an agenda on my part, it is exposing the lies and challenging people to THINK. That is all, disagree with me, call me a right-winger, discount me and everything I say. There are a whole lot of old oil fields that were abandoned before 25% of the oil was pumped out. There's a whole lot of the black stuff left (which is usually green LOL!) in places where it isn't viable to produce it at 30 bux a barrel but over 50, there is plenty.  Doesn't mean we shouldn't be looking at alternatives but we sure don't need to follow bonehead barry's formula of skyrocketing prices of traditional energy to hasten the transfer to alternatives that aren't ready yet.

But seriously, take my statement into 2 parts.  What is long sighted?  

And yes I really do believe we could have access to CRAPLOADS of oil.  

2 things, there are the salesmen that run around promoting certain finds.  What they do is listen to the geologists who say ok, well, we have a range of potential oil production, (in years).  For instance, in south texas there is a shale oil find, called Eagle Ford Shale.  They think there is anywhere from 30 to 75 years of production.  Based on some different oil prices.  Realistically I take that number and split it down the middle.  Which I feel is beyond safe.  Because those number don't necessarily take into account a change in technology.  And make no mistake about it, the saying should be, well it ain't petroleum engineering (instead of rocket science)...  (they actually have technological break through in the oil industry)  Anyway, this is one of 5-6 different equally promising oil finds in the United States.  If these finds pan out.  (production in south Texas is booming right now) You're talking geologic models showing bigger reserves than all the middle east...  There is another one out in west Texas.  There is another one in 20 feet of water off the coast of Louisiana.  There are a couple in the Rockies (on federal lands and they're not leasing it out), there are the oil sands in Canada (the one they're trying to build the pipeline from that Obama is blocking)  There are major reserves in Alaska.  This is on top of already known reserves that are being pumped.  

The other thing, is that EACH major find is going through major legal issues from the tree hugger crowd.  In west texas they're having major issues because of the range of some dang "endangered species lizard."  They're going after the the Eagle Ford Shale for "causing earth quakes"  (I'm not kidding)  

Anyway, That is just what we know now.  And these are finds discovered within the last 15 years.  (these are just in the North America)  There is a decent find off the coast of Cuba.  There is still more oil leaking out of the ground (naturally) in the Gulf of Mexico daily than what came spewing out of the Macondo well every day...  You know they think Israel has 250 billion barrels of oil feasible at 30-40 dollars a barrel...  

Here is the deal, we have a plentiful inexpensive (if the government doesn't hamper it at every turn) energy source.  It is efficient, current technologies make it really clean...  And the doomsday predictors are just that, or making political statements because they have a stake in the alchemy industry of global warming...

Shale is a whole new game. The zealots are trying to shut down the production with a lot of phony claims about fragging which is the only way to produce those formations. There's a project here in Colorado that was rejected because they feared dust from the trucks traveling on the roads would land on some flowers and mess them up LOL! Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado have more petroleum locked into the shale than is under the middle east. They just need to come up with an effective way to produce it all. It isn't so hard to get the natural gas out but the oil is a lot harder. With the glut of nat gas I am surprised more people aren't going to that to fuel vehicles.

I would like to see any company that is exploring alternative energy get 100% of the R&D expense taken $ for $ off their taxes. So if Shell, Conoco, Texaco, Chevron, BP (for example but any business who researches alternative fuel and energy) spends $500 million on alternative energy research and production, they get to claim that as an exemption as usual, and then get a $ for $ removed from their normal tax bill. We have plenty of oil and I think we ought to be using it to get 100% energy independent, but I would like to see some kind of revolution in alternative energy that will make fossil fuel obsolete. But since the 1970's a true, suitable alternative seems as illusive as the alchemists turning lead into gold.

Yep. I wish the government would quit subsidizing installation of inefficient solar panels or the POS Chevy volt and use the money for R&D for technology that is cost effective. Chevron oil has a weird project in California. They use steam injection in a lot of oil wells. They have a field of mirrors that reflect on a water tank on a tower to produce the steam for one field. It's still more costly than using natural gas but once California's cap and trade scheme kicks in next year it will be a little cheaper than nat gas. I wish I could find the one picture of the thing, it looks pretty weird with all the light focused on it.

There is a project in Nevada, where they are going to use a buncha mirrors to superheat steam to make a steam engine that generates electricity.
