Brittle star is bleeding?

I mistakenly got a star and my tank isn't optimal yet. However it looks like the star has gills   Is this normal. I thought for sure it was going to die a few days ago but  I think I just saw a decomposed snail come out from under it.   What is this red stuff?

I have never seen a sea star bleed red....   what kind of star? got any pictures? where is the red stuff coming from on the star?
