Opinion on treating Ick with Lifeguard Instant Ocean

We went into Petco today, and the guy there suggested that we use Lifeguard Instant ocean to treat our Clown Fish, Dwarf angel, and also our Blenny for ick... I first noticed it on our dwarf angel (Dori) and then noticed a few spot on Bodaget, the clown fish! We cannot see our blenny because he never really comes out of the rock... Is it a good and safe process to use it in our tank?? We have also started a whole new tank.. Would it also be a bad thing to stick these fish in our new tank if the Lifeguard really does treat our fish??

IMHO, the best way to treat a fish with ich is to take them out of the display tank and put them in a quarantine tank. then treat with copper OR hyposalinity.

I've looked into that stuff you are talking about and I didn't even want to use it on my quarantine tank. I prefer tried and true methods of disease control.

On a side note, it's sometimes better to just leave the fish alone and let them deal with it. Eventually they may get better. If it's a bad case of ich, most likely they won't in a closed system like our aquariums.

Sometimes feeding foods with fresh pressed garlic can boost their immune systems and help them fend off ich better.

I hope Beth can make it to this thread and help you out more than I can.

Thank you!! We have heard about using Copper and will for sure look into it! Thank you :)

On a side note for copper... NEVER DOSE YOUR DISPLAY TANK.

Copper can not easily be gotten out of the rocks, sand and filters, if at all. Therefore, only use copper on a quarantine tank. Copper kills invertebrates - snails, corals, hermits, brittle stars, ... everything without a spine. Therefore, NEVER DOSE A DISPLAY TANK WITH COPPER.

More importantly than treating the ich though might be understanding why/how they got it in the first place.

Did you buy livestock from a live fish store that you saw in front of you?

Did you inspect your fish for disease before purchase?

Did you ask to see the fish eat before you bought it?

Did you make sure that any of your fish are not overly aggressive towards each other?

Are you sure your display tank is large enough to keep those fish?

A fish that is in a crowded, small, agressive tank will definitely get disease because of stress and a depressed immuno-responce system.

Lifeguard would be a complete waste of time, with unknown side effects to your display.  I'm assuming you don't have a QT?

What type of setup (reef, fish only, etc.) do you have these fish in?

Snake, you're doing a pretty good job with the advise wo me.  bigg.gif

Thanks Beth.

I am not as knowledgeable as you though. I guess I need to read more. Lolbowdown.gif

I had ich as well in my tank, I treated it for like 6 or so weeks. So far I have been fortunate enough to get it back for about 2 1/2 months. I feel bad luck coming as I talk about this. *KNOCK ON WOOD*

Reading is good.  Especially with all the material there is to read in the hobby nowdays.  The school of hard knocks is a good teacher as well, and, unfortunately, if is oftentimes the best teacher.

Yes we have a QT tank! We have been using lifeguard for 3 days and the spots are going away and not spreading anymore... We have done some reading up on the product and there was a few people who were not sure by it... because of how new it is... We will see how well it works now that we have made it this far.. We do have our new tank waiting to go through its 3 week prossess!! Thanks for all of your help and if this doesnt work we will for sure use the copper method!!

From what I researched about it, the medicine was inconclusive as to if it worked or the fish fought it off naturally.

I don't recommend copper with angels or blennies, they do not handle copper well, can cause death. Hypo is will kill ick if done correctly, with no side effects.

As Beasbob say, just my .02 cents
