Ordered some Reef chromis! - Page 2

3" is about the average for chromis. I personally have never seen a 5" chromis. Captive specimens hardly ever reach their full potential. They look awesome!

LOL...no kidding. I haven't added any fish for so long...not since the power went out, and I lost my hippo, lemonpeel and Kole tang. I only replaced the lemonpeel.....no fish since then.

Nice additions. Chromis are fun to watch... hopefully they will survive! (Not because of your skills though!!!!) I've heard a lot of talk about cyanide...

This is my first time posting a reply :)  Growing up I always had a freshwater tank, my husband and I are both new to saltwater and this past November we started up tank number one, a 180g  6ft long  saltwater tank FOWLR.  We had started out with 6 clowns (4 red and 2 black/white)....then we added 6 Blue/green chromis a couple weeks after that. Two weeks after that we added a flame angel and some invertebrates ( snails,hermits and 2 cleaner shrimp). Everything was going along so smoothly! The tank sat for 3 weeks without fish in it as well with just the live rock and was set up by our local fish store, just to back track a little. Soooo.....a few more weeks went by and we added some bigger fish, a pair of Longfin Banners, a Racoon Butterfly, and a Potters Angel. The tank was doing fabulous!! And then came the Ich :(

We haven't lost anymore fish in a few weeks, we are over the hump in that respect.still swimming are the Flame Angel, one orange clown....and ALL of the chromis (I think they are bulletproof!)  After going through that horrible experience we decided on getting a quarantine tank.....which was just going to be something simple...that turned into us purchasing a Red Sea Max 250 which we have set up in our bedroom :)  Which we eventually would like to do coral...but for now ALL fish stop here before going into the main tank. And of course..3 Blue Damsels are the first guys in. Good luck with your Chromis! I wouldn't worry, we had the temp. up, salinity way down, treated the tank with Voogle, they look better than ever.

The best advice I can give anyone else starting up...QUARANTINE TANK!!!!! Our local fish store didn't encourage it, I know a lot of people say it isn't necessary but we will never be without one again.

Welcome to the forums! Start a build thread of your own tanks and share your experiences with everyone! I hope you enjoy your stay! By the way, I really like your handle. :D Sorry to hear of all your troubles - but I am glad that you now quarantine all of your new additions. It's a very good practice, and I am glad that you are being a responsible aquarist!

Yep nothing is as important than a quarantine tank to keep everyone healthy.

Thanks Gemmy, I was expecting little cardinal sized fish. At any rate so far so good. The angel gave them a hard time, and the clowns came out of the corner to chase them a bit... but all settled down after about 15 to 20 minutes. They are all about the same size..the orchid dottyback thinks it found some friends and hangs with the pack, he is the smallest fish in the tank. One Chromis looks a little rough...fin nipping among his fellows perhaps. Not real bad, and no body damage, but I can see the fins look rough. The light has to hit them just right to look good, otherwise they look dark.

 

 

Snake, I hope they make it. I have a 14 day quarantee but without a QT, the CUC will make short work of any casualties. I really am thinking (hoping) that since they guarnantee their fish, they make sure no cyanide or other bad method of capture was used. I think most of their fish are captive bred. Blue zoo aquatics has captive bred blue chromis as well.

 

I have plenty of change water on hand...I have never added 5 fish that size at once to any tank I ever had.

 Well they made it through the night just fine, but this morning the angel and orchid dottyback are hiding in the rocks. I'm so disgusted, maybe I will get rid of every fish and keep seahorses in the 90g as well.

LOL...I hope so too and have my fingers crossed. If I ever, and I hope to never have a total die off of fish....I will replace them with potbellied seahorses.

I had that happen it is not fun. After I bought all that live rock, it also came with ick. So after a few days all my fish had ick, I had nine fish in my tank, lost all but one. I learned a hard lesson that day, now I QT everything wet, no ifs or buts.

Update:

 

All are alive and healthy...rear fins have been nipped...because they nip at each other. They do seem to be settling down accepting the new home, and they are looking much more blue since yesterday...but the back fins on the two largest chromis are 1/2 gone. Peaceful my butt..they school alright..chasing each other.
