Am I Maxed Out?

Thread Starter

Hi, all - I am having an issue with what I should do.

My 54 gallon corner fish only tank currently has

Yellow Tang

Clown

Blue Stripe Cleaner Wrasse

Red Eye Cardinal

Yellow Goby

Yellow/Black Dot Puffy (from wal-mart)

Bunch of crabs/snails

All fish are about an inch except Yellow Tang who's about 2 inches.

I understand about the size of the fish and if mine grew to be too large I would give it away for sure.

I tried to add another one in - first Hippo Tang - dropped dead after 5 days.

Then yellow/blue Angel - dropped dead after 3 days.

The water parameters are perfect - I am using all necessary chemicals to check.

Am I done adding anything?  Was it just coincidence?

I don't get it cause all my fish lives happy still

Any ideas?

I wouldn't recommend adding any more fish to your tank.  That's not why they died though.

what are your actual numbers and what tests do you take?

are they getting picked on or do they look fine when they die?, do they eat well?

also something that could help would be a Quarantine tank to get them acclimated and make sure they are eating and such before you try adding them to your main DT

I understand about the size of the fish and if mine grew to be too large I would give it away for sure. Actually, I'm going to say you don't understand the full effects of keeping a larger breed of fish in a small tank. It can stunt their growth, cause health issues and makes them more aggressive. For example a yellow tang that grows up in a 55G will almost always be more aggressive than one that is in 100+G. It's not natural for them to be in a small tank, even while they are growing out. You're really doing an injustice to these fish. Think about how some people keep dogs in small cages except for when they're taken out for walks/or to clean the cage. These dogs have poor muscle formation and often die at a young age and are plagued with many health issues. Would you want to live in your closet?

I tried to add another one in - first Hippo Tang - dropped dead after 5 days. The yellow tang may have killed it. OR, you bought a small specimen, under 3", which has a very low survival rate to begin with.

Then yellow/blue Angel - dropped dead after 3 days. Yellow tang probably killed it.

The water parameters are perfect - I am using all necessary chemicals to check. This isn't saying much. What test kits do you use? What are your actual readings?

Am I done adding anything? Yes, and I believe you've asked this in the past as well. Your tank is FULL. Especially since it's a corner tank. They do not allow as much swimming room to begin with. Was it just coincidence? See answers already given

Your tank is maxed out and you're trying to add fish that are open water swimmers to a small environment. A small environment that already has one aggressive open water swimmer. And let's not rule out the puffer that can also be territorial.  Even if you don't see aggression, I could almost guarantee it's occurring.  There's also the issue of what you may or may not be feedings these fish, etc.
