Nerite snails question

Are they good to use in reef tanks? I read where they have to come out of the water occasionally to breathe. Can anyone help me? Are they not good to use in the hobby like margarita snails?

I think they're great.  They inhabit different zones than other snails ie. the water line.  They are reproduce in our tanks which is a nice bonus.

Very cool to know. Thanks bang. Anyone else have any info on them?

I have yet to successfully acclimate nerite snails. Other snail types, no problem at all.

Nerites fall dead as soon as they hit the sand or crawl halfway up a rock, then fall dead.

weird. My Nerites are all alive and well so far. No losses... other then one that a hermit crab caught and killed. (banished that sucker too...!)

Try setting them on a plate with no water (keep them warm).  Clean a spot on the inside of the tank above the water line so there is no salt creep on the glass.  After a while they will start to crawl around.  As they start poking around pick them up one by one and hold them on the spot you cleaned until they grab on.  Then leave them to self-acclimate.

Note - this procedure may void your guarantee but it has never failed me.

Thanks Bang!

I had written off keeping nerites, I will try again with this method.

How do you figure this kind of stuff out?

I have a ton of them in my 180. Great little snails, WHEN THEY"RE NOT BUSY LAYING EGGS EVERYWHERE! They tend to stay on the glass and don't do much for the rocks.

They're probably Collinista snails, which look like baby Trochus or Nerite snails quite often, but could be nerites. Do you ever see nerite eggs?

Even if I put mine on the rocks, they find they're way back to the glass. My trochus are wonderful at keeping my rocks clean though, so I don't stress too much.

I'm due April 26, but probably won't make it all the way to the due date (and at this point, I'm hoping I don't, pregnancy sucks! LOL) My husband never wanted kids either. We were told that we'd have a really hard time if we ever even did conceive, so he was totally down for "trying" until he got screwed, LOL  He still tells people I drugged him into this whole thing. It took him a long time to get used to the idea, but now he's really excited, more so than me. She's going to have him wrapped around her finger so fast!

Turbin Snails are broadcast spawners and are very unlikely to reproduce in a hobbiest aquarium.
