Overflows

Since I have been looking at building a salt tank I have been doing alot of reading.  It seems like there is more different types of overflows than you can shake a stick at.  I'm sure they all fall in the following categories...

Good, better, and best

But the question is... are those categories subjective to the individual.

I mean... there are DIY options of god only knows how many varieties, and store bought like the glass holes ones.

What got me to thinking about this is while I was on their site I noticed that you could buy the bulkheads by themselves and they also had strainers that you could attach to the bulkheads to keep your critters out of the pipes.

So why wouldn't something like this work?

I dunno... Im just trying to learn as much as I can before I dive in.

Shawn.. I'll read the link you sent me prolly in the next couple of days.  I cant access it on this particular computer.

Not sure where your really heading......Bulkheads and strainers have been used forever and really hasn't anything to do with overflow design IMO......Are you referring to open standpipes with no overflow box and just a strainer attached when you mention/reference overflow systems.......shrug.gif

As far as overflow designs there are always going to be pros and cons to anything you use or employ...Be it reliability, tune ability, noise, appearance, space a certain design takes up....The list could go on and on.....Bottom line I think it really comes down to what your really after in an overflow system.

You could definitely do it that way. It's a bit noisy, but yah get used to it.

Drilling glass is easy. If you really want to get a silent overflow, with emergency backup, look into the beananimal design.

It doesn't have to be a pre-made box to be functional.

Agree, but most of us want a silent or near silent system......I don't mind the noise in the fish room, but don't want to hear everything outside the fish room.....Your correct doesn't have to be a pre made box to be functional, but some type of internal weir makes it a heck of a lot more efficient than open stand pipes.....

You could drill the bottom of the tank if it's not tempered. You could buy a piece of glass to cut off a corner of the tank and make a durso standpipe at the top. It would also be silent and efficient. Not sure though if your tank is tempered on the bottom or not.

Durso's aren't dead silent.......Most tanks after a set size usually use tempered because of cost efficiency......A big key to an effective; efficient overflow system should be quiet, relatively fail safe, and easily adjustable......

Hence the pushing for the beananimal design. :)

Honestly I grew tired quickly of fidgeting with Durso's trying to keep it quiet, and they needed adjusted......Another reason I'm staying away from Beckett skimmers this go around.....

Agreed.

Sorry... I've been tied up the last few days.

I guess what I am looking for is a comparative between the internal overflow box from glass holes vs the other options like I described.  If I understand correctly... with the beananimal you still have to have some sort of box.  While I could probaby learn how to work with plexi it would take some time.

Comparatively....Glass Holes your limited to their sizes......Doing it yourself you can make it any size you choose, and working with plexi for a simple job like that you could easily do master tops an hour......If you'd like I'm going to be gluing up some stuff here come this weekend the earliest, but could easily shoot a short video to give you an idea as to how easy it is.......If you can handle a bottle of super glue; I'm more than confident you can handle building your own box......Basically it depends how fancy you want your box to be.......

I would greatly appreciate the video.

Not a problem.....The earliest I'll get to it will be Saturday.....Way to hard and tired to try to do it during the work week.

It's all good.  I don't see myself jumping into that project anytime soon.  Im just trying to get as much info as I can and learn as much as I can before I jump in the middle of things.
