this might be a stupid question but can I use beach sand in my aquarium?

Yes, but your just asking for trouble. It will be better in the long run to use a calcium based media for your substrate.

i wouldn't recomend it but if it is thouroghly cleaned it should be fine

I wouldn't use it due to possible contaminates that may be in the sand. Pollution is everywhere and on every beach. The Ocean has trillions of gallons of water to dissapate the pollutants but your tank does not. Buy some cheap dry sand from HD or on line somewhere.
