Do you tip on carry-out orders from restaurants?

If your pizza place charges you $3 for delivery and the delivery guy gets that - do you still tip him more? We have that situation - Barracos in Plainfield, Il. $3 for delivery!!!

Ouch! That is alot for a delivery charge :eek:
I appear to be the fool. As at work, I'm the only one who leaves a tip also. Oh well, ignorance was bliss

Absolutely . . . and here's why. For one thing, I worked in the resturant business for several years as a server and I can attest that tipping on carryout orders is definitely fair.

Granted that it is true that the person giving you the order does not refil your drinks, or clear your table . . . however much more work than most people think goes into getting an order together. The person makes sure that you get the correct order and rings in your food. Once it gets made, in a busy resturant, the person must make sure they they actually get the correct food from the kitchen . . . not always an easy task . . . they also make sure that any special requests are filled and they also ensure that all necessary condiments/utensils are there in the bag. Furthermore they make sure that the food stays hot. All this so that you can walk in the door hand over payment and walk out the door in the minimal amount of time.

Now granted I don't think that 20% is necessary, however at LEAST 10% . . . .

Just a little heads up to those who don't tip on carry outs . . . . if you order a carry out from a resturant and dont tip the carry out person . . . . I would STRONGLY advise against going back . . . . . servers have excellent memories :nervous:

While delivering pizza's in high school, one of the other drivers kept a little black book of delivery address's. 3 no-tip deliveries, and well.... I wouldn't eat the pizza the next time they ordered. One of the "most interesting" jobs I have ever had!

I usually give a tip in this situation, depending on the amount/quality of service provided.

Also keep in mind that the person putting the order together is normally making the incomprehendibly low $2.18 an hour so they are really relying on tips to make a living.

In MI its 2.65 . . . eithr way I am so happy to hear that someone realizes this!

The minimum wage law does not apply to jobs where the primary income is expected to be derived from tips. Basically... IMO, it's a crime.

I agree that its basically a crime . . . just a little FYI for those of you who don't tip or are poor tippers, heres some food for thought (no pun intended) . . . . if you tip a server less than 10% of the total bill, that server is actually losing money by waiting on you. Regardless of what is left as a tip, the feds tax 8% of the food sale bill which the 2.65 that was earned in the hour that the person was sitting there, won't even cover.

Even though this is a fish page, i am glad to get this into somewhat of a public forum. Too many people out there have no idea what its like to wait tables . . . . IMO/E It is one of the most difficult jobs on the market and one of the lowest paid. I firmly believe that everyone should wait tables for at least one year in their life, just to see what its like.

I don't think that this is a good rule to follow IMO, but thats just me. For example, doing this in MI would result to a 12% tip . . . NOT a good tip. On the wine thing . . . well, if you're ordering a $50 bottle of wine, then you can afford to leave a tip on it. The only items that can show up on a resturant tab that should not be included in "tippable totals" are gift cards as they are not a consummable good. JMO . . .

Eat in,Carry out,or delivery, I tip based on service recieved. Now, if it's crappy service,I tip low... slow cooks,I still tip the server because it isn't their fault. Basically, if the tea glass stays full I tip good

The meal I most often eat out is breakfast. And I figure if someone can smile and serve customers at 6 AM, they deserve a big tip.
