Well......the soon-to-be wife has decided for us that we need to lose some poundage before the wedding day (Only four weeks away).
She is making me do this Atkin's Diet with her where you don't get to eat any carbs..........well......20g per day which is basically none. I am not a big meat-eater and I am at a loss as to what the heck I can eat........I'm starving!!
Anyone have any good foods that you would like to share with me in my time of pain? HELP ME! I NEED NOODLES and POTATOES.

The jury is still out on Atkins. Some studies link it to hypercholesterol in certain participants. If you're a carnivore, you'll like it, otherwise, it can become rather a turn off. Not sure what your tastes for fruits and veggies are, but you never see an overweight person who has a high intake of fibrous foods and who exercises regularly. Lots of water, small portions of meat and yes, less carbs and starches. Atkins is for many a fad diet like a lot of others. Weight loss revelation!! Eat less and move more!

The Atkins diet is a good diet, but only for those that want to lose alot of weight. It is not intended to be used by someone that only wants to lose 5-10 pounds. It is to be used for people that are 20 or more pounds overweight. I know of alot of people (friends) that have used it and are still on it. One of my friends has been on it for 3 years, but is taking in 40-60 g's of carbs. His doctor recommended it to him and also told him to start off at 20 grams of carbs a day until he lost the weight that he wanted to lose. After he reached his goal the doctor told him to bump his carb intake up to 40-60 grams a day to maintain his weight. He also told him that after he was at the weight he wanted to be at then he should be on the diet for a week, then take 2 days off and eat what he wanted, then to go on it for a week, then off for 2 days. He says that it works great, and recommends it to everyone that wants to lose alot of weight.
There are alot of internet sites out there that give meals for the Atkins diet that arent half bad. One thing that my friend loved was not having to give up his beef.
Also the Atkins diet has been around for quite along time, and has had numerous studies done on it. Most of the started after Dr. Atkins had his heart attack, and if I remember right most of them concluded that if he hadnt been on the diet that he would have suffered the heart attack much sooner and the outcome would have been more severe. There are always going to be bad things about a diet.

I have a couple of friends that had great success with this diet that I'm willing to give it a try. I weighed 165 when I got married 6 years ago and now I weigh 193. I don't really look fat. Some say I was too skinny when I was at 165 but I sure felt alot better then. With America quickly becoming an obese country, I'd like not to gain anymore weight and hopefully stay at 175.
Well, I'm fat. The last diet I was on was like Trojan talked about. I moved more, but ate more.. I ate 6 meals a day.. Small meals..
I lost 30lbs in 6 months. As soon as I stopped walking, I gained it all back... So, I'm still fat:)

I work out quite a bit, and all I have to say is that its not really what you eat or how much you eat IF you work out, but you have to watch your calorie intake. I am currently eating around 3000 calories a day, and I divide them up between 5 meals.

I'm unhealthily overweight (I mean, not like really obviously overweight) and people like to ask me if I'm pregnant. I mean, I'm not like the really big women with flaps on their arms or anything, but my weight is causing heart and asthma problems. Unfortunately, with school and studying, exercise is hard to come by. The most exercise I get all day is climbing the stairs to Marine Biology 101 on the second floor. Right now, I'm at 5'3" and 170 lbs. However, I have stopped eating fast food and now eat only at home except on special occasions (Mardi Gras this weekend counts as one :) ), and have lost almost 5 lbs. in the last month or so. I'm proud of this, but I still have a long way to go... :(

Frightening words from a man about to take his vows! I was joking a bit with those lines........truth is, I want to try to be on it with the fiancee so it is easier for her to deal with. I don't think she would do very well if I was cooking whatever I want while I give her a hamburger with no bun. Since I do all of the cooking.......it will be easier anyway.

My wife and I have been on it for about a month. I'm down 10lbs and she's down 15. I'd probably do better but I haven't given up the beer. Supposidly "free" carbs, but, I'd probably lose more without the beer. Buy hey, I gave up potatoes!
Good Luck with the pounds and even more well wishes for matrimony. When you find the right one it's great!

Jillian - just remember it is a long distance race - not a sprint. I too was grossly overweight - 288 pounds and standing 5'8" (with spiked hair - hahaha)
I tried everything- inlucding atkins - finally did slim4life - I am now down to 215 and still losing ....
Rye - drink lots of water - it makes you feel full and helps your body metabolize food faster. I try to get 80 ounces of water down me a day (10 - 8 ounce glasses of water a day ....)

Rye,
Like broomer said, my wife is on it and I am by default. She loves it. One thing about the diet is that you do not have to be hungry, just eat certain foods. Go to their website and see what you can eat.
Fortunately I do not need to diet because it would be hard for me to give up my bread and potatoes.

Have you and your fiancee ever considered going on the Zone diet? It is actually very similiar to the Atkins diet but you are allowed to eat more carbs(not much more). You may be able to adjust to this diet easier and hence stick with it longer. Also, you can get alot of recipes for this diet which would make it that much easier.

I did the Atkin's diet for about a month and I can tell you now, I have never craved a peice of bread so badly as when I was on the diet. I like meat and cheese but not that much. If you want to trim up a bit, I would do three things: 1. Eat 6 small responsible meals a day. Cut way down on sugars and carbs. 2. Don't eat within 4 hours of bedtime. and 3. Achieve and maintain your target heartrate for 30 minutes per day.
My parents are on it and they seem to love it.

This morning I made myself a Turkey and Cheese omlet and I have discovered that you can eat as much sugar-free Jell-O with Reddi Wip on it as you wish. Whoo Hoo!
I am having a Grilled Chicken Caesar salad w/ no croutons for lunch. I should be fine. I am not one to quit anything so I am not worried about falling off of the diet but, I sure can complain about it. :p

Rye,
Recently I found out that I had high chloresterol, so the doctor recommended I try changing my diet, and then after six months said I will go on medication.
This was just before Christmas, talk about a nice present!!! Since then I have lost 20 lbs, I really was not that much over weight ... 6 ft tall and 207 lbs.
I have basically cut or reduced fat from my diet. I eat very little red meat, mostly turkey, chicken and fish. I eat slightly just about the same as I did before, and really do not have problems with hunger.
I just use fat free / low fat foods, watching the calories in the food itself. I do not count calories, just watch the fat and cholesterol. Things seem to be going well... I will get checked again in May for cholesterol. Turning 50 this year, and not being to active (work at home on the computer), the diet / eating style has worked for me. The Adkins diet would not be recommended for me.
Try cutting out the fat, and you may be able to loose about 10 lbs in a month, depending on what you ate before.
Best wishes on your diet, and hope you have a good and successful marriage like my wife and I. It will be 30 yrs this year.

The Atkins diet really works! I lost soem good poundage on it.
Carbs and sugars are your true enemy. The less you eat, the more you lose.
Some suggestions:
NUTS Macadamia Nuts only have 1 carb per ounce.
Sunflower or pumpkin seeds
Avocados. Cabbage Brussel sprouts. Romaine lettuce. and VERY good for protein with no carbs.....mushrooms!
Slim Jims/ Salami/ pepperoni sticks
If eating at Fast food, buy burgers with extra lettuce and mayo (if you like mayo) and throw away the bun using the lettuce as the bun instead (surprisingly good!)
Also Atkins makes "protein" bread and carbo-less pasta. Find this at the health food store.
And my favorite...........any meat you like cooked mexican style. Like ground beef or chicken etc. Then SMOTHER it in chesse, sour cream and Guacamole! MMMMMmmm
I lost 17+ pounds in 14 days on the induction diet. I was 6'3" 250lbs when I started. I am still 6'3" but now under 230lbs. :)
And you can have a potato...just reverse the process. Peal the potato as usual, but eat the peels and throw away the inside! hehehehe

Rye,.
I do not know if you have a sweet tooth but around here the health food stores carry the Atkins candy bars. The wife says they are good. She also eats almonds by the handful. Oh yeah you can reduce chicken stock (Boil off the water) with some seasoning to act as a gravy.
Dude someone has to say it, You are going on this diet for you soon to be wife and you do most of the cooking. Man you are PW'd already. :D
Just kidding, I do most of the cooking too. At least this year I did not have to make my traditional lasagne while watching the Daytona 500. ;)

Somebody has to say it...The Atkins diet is about as healthy as eating bigmacs 3 times a day. It is great for short term weight loss, but most people who lose on the atkins diet gain it back, plus raise cholesterol. The best way to lose weight, is a balanced diet, excersize, and excersize some more. Doing little things like eating soy products(natural metabolism enhancer) and lifting weights(burn more fat long term over cardio) will work a lot better. Just IMO though, I guess diets are the same as tanks

I tried the Atkins diet once but I'm a Dr Pepper addict. I thought well I could just have one and it's like smoking I was right back to it. Then I decided to try weight watchers where you count the points and a can of Dr Pepper is only 4 points so if I skipped breakfast and lunch I could have dinner and 3 Dr Peppers! whoohoo - then I realized that probably wasn't real healthy so I modified the diet. I found out that if you eat only protein for breakfast you don't get as hungry during the day and I just eat less. I could still stand to lose 15 lbs or so.:( The zone is good if you are a movie star and have all your meals delivered to you......no food in the house.....and a personal trainer....on the zone the amount of food of any variety you get is pretty scarce. Good luck but honestly I've seen pics of you and you are not fat!

The best diet in the world is the MCRD San Diego diet (Parris Island diet on the east coast) ... the Marines out there know what I mean !!!
I went to boot camp at 205# of fat (my maximum allowable weight). 13 weeks later, I left at 175# of muscle. :D
Now with the sedintary computer life, I have gained some weight back. Some key tips I have learned along the way are as follows:
Fad diets that involve ----- are worthless.
Cabbage soup - water weight loss and colon cleansing
Atkins - the theory has merit - no carb intake means the body will have to work harder to convert food to energy. BUT, instead of eating a deli sandwich (w/ 2 slices of whole wheat bread at 20g of carbs each), I can eat a Classic Triple from Wendy's with 1230 calories, 510 calories from fat, 57g of fat, 21g of saturated fat, and 72g of protein ? The only good thing I see there is the 72g of protein.....with no bun.
The best LONG TERM diet I have found is simple. Park as far as you can from you work building so you can walk in, and walk to lunch if possible (you burn as many calories walking a mile as running), eat according to the serving size on foods and only eat 1 serving, COUNT CALORIES and if trying to lose weight try to hit 1500/day, drink TONS of water (try for a gallon a day - no Cool-Aid). The water will keep your stomach full making you feel full and not hungry. Eat multiple small meals vice the half a box of cereal, the supersize value meal, and half the tray of lasagna with half a loaf of buttered bread. Basically, nibble on carrots (non fat ranch dressing is ok IN MODERATION) and go for natural foods. For example, it takes more energy for your body to breakdown whole wheat bread than it does white bread. Cut back complex carbohydrates (potatoes and pasta). Cut back dairy. Not because you gain weight, but it helps you RETAIN weight (packs up your track). Natural peanut butter (the kind with the film of grease on top) has been proven to be better for the body than Jiff and Peter Pan. Fruits and vegetables have both a cleansing effect and contain relativly no calories.
And the biggest thing is to understand what you read !!! Understand that a calorie is NOT something food HAS, but something food REQUIRES.
A calories is a measure of enery expenditure. To put things in perspective, a 150# person will burn about 100 calories per mile. Look back at that Wendy's Classic Triple earlier...1230 calories...that equates to 12.3 miles to burn that off...that is why I doubt some of Atkins' wording (cutting carbs is a good place to start though). Most people will burn more calories and lose weight faster lifting weights for 1 hours than running for 1 hour. It all depends on your metabolism.
Well, now that I have worn the letters off of my keyboard, I will wish you all good luck in your endeavors and weight loss !!!
Oh, 1 last thing...two 8oz chicken breasts have about double the protein and half half the calories as a 16oz steak !!!
I like fish
02-20-2003, 07:07 PM
Also, weight lifting increases metabolism. Even if you only put on 5 pounds of muscle, you burn more fat/calories while you are sitting at the puter!

This is not going to be any type of long term thing. I gained about ten pounds already since I got fitted for my Tuxedo and the fiancee thinks her arms are fat and wants to lose 10-15lbs. Short term.
I think it is working so far and I like salads so it is not a huge problem. Once I get a little free time I will be back at the gym and eating my macaroni and mashed potatoes again. ;)

Am I the only one this is happening to? Every time I pull up this thread I get one of those d@#n pop ups that about going on some diet.....that is freaky, never on any thread has that happened. Are the internet diet police monitoring this thread or somethin?
I hate the Atkins diet. There's nothing you can eat except fat, meat, eggs and cheeze! No soda, not even diet.
I did do it for awhile, and lost weight, but my cholestreal jumped from excellent to borderline. I quit it. Also, the minute you eat a carb, you gain all the weight back. LOL...so, as soon as you put that piece of wedding cake in your mouth, expect to bust out of your pants. :D

mikegronholz,
I got out of the Marines 30 yrs ago, this coming March 3rd. After boot camp and infantry training I had gained 12 lbs to weighed a whopping 175 lbs. I am at 187 now, 12 lbs more that I left Marine Corps.
I hope in the next few months to be back to that weight again. I will see how it goes. I guess if I would get out of this chair and exercise, I could have already been there.

Atkins is actually a very healthy diet. It's not true that you don't have carbs. You have 20 a day for the first 2 weeks, then you start upping your carb level until you reach your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Living. For some people thats 50 carbs a day. I've been on it faithfully Since January 4th, and have already lost 35 pounds. Rye...tell your fiance to visit this site...it's my lifeline, and she will get tons of info and support there...tell her to look for Ladybug...that's me.

I am not personally impressed with the diet. There is no "silver bullet" when it comes to losing weight. Eat a healthy diet. If you eat carbs, eat complex ones which the body uses more energy to break down. The change you are looking for needs to come about by a change in lifestyle (eating healthy and working out on a regular basis).
Sorry to burst anyone's bubble.
It is kind of like our hobby, there are no quick fixes, but regular routine maintenance.
My 2 cents.

A few observations.
The atkins diet doesn't make much nutritional sense. It goes against most other nutritional guidelines. It is deficient in calcium and fiber and obviously high in fat and cholesterol. It doesn't teach you how to eat after you have lost weight.
However, it tends to be a relatively easy diet to stay on. The high fat and protein content tends to cut down some people's cravings so it seems to be more effective for some people. If someone loses weight their lipid profiles/cholesterol almost always improve. I consider it to be safe only if someone is actually losing weight. I usually recommend a fiber and calcium supplement with it. I have recommended it to patients as it is safer than most medications or surgery.
IMO, the Weight Watchers points system is a better diet to stay on long term.
I am also a strong believer in exercise. Most people overestimate how many calories they burn up. The average person has to run/walk/jog around 35 miles to lose one pound of fat!

Personally, I'm a supporter of Gastric bypass surgery, but only if you have tried many other options over a prolonged period of time with no sucess. After watching my mother and her younger brother be at least 100-200 pounds over weight most of their lives this surgery was a god send for them. They both had it 2-3 yrs ago and are now fine and very happy with the results. My uncle is only 30 yrs old and was pretty much a home body because he was ashamed of his looks and in today's societyno females would give him the time of day and he had only had one girlfriend his whole life and was scared of being alone forever and dying young if he stayed fat. This surgery has changed his life!!! 2 yrs later he is about 200lbs lighter is married and has a 5 month old daughter. Yes, there are risks involved but they are minimal and there are just as many risks disease and death if you stay fat. If you are a qualified canidate for this surgery I say go for it, it will change your life!!! :cheer:

I dont see how people can do the atkins diet. I just dont get it? Carbs have so much nutritional value, how do you have any energy w/o carbs. Also just eating cheese eggs and meat... that cant be too good for cholestral can it? Plus once you go off of those diets you just gain it back and then some.
From what I understand the only way to lose weight deals with lifestyle. Ive lost about 30 lbs since last year just running on the treadmale every night and cutting back on quanities of food.
I guess the atkins works for, I just dont think I could do it. But know that I think about it... If I were on it, Id be at outback steakhouse every night of the week having a sirloin! Man those things are good!

Don't knock it till you try it. First 3 or 4 days - you dont have energy - but after that you'd be VERY suprised at how much energy you get. I personally have WAY more energy now that I'm not burning out on sugar.
