We just purchased a new R&J 50 gallon Fusion aquarium. I am wanting some input on filtration and skimmers. The sump in the back of the tank is 46" in length and less then 3" wide and has 5 separate chambers. I have not found a protein skimmer for a 50 gallon tank that is narrow enough to fit in the sump and I would prefer not to use a HOB skimmer. Would it be an option to use 2 small skimmers, one on each end? The next question is on the filtration. The tank came with some bio-balls to be installed in 2 of the sump chambers. I am thinking of building a couple of filter baskets instead of using the bio-balls. Would it be better to make a setup using sponges and media or filter socks?
