closeups with out being grainy

I've got a Sony DSC-S85 (4 megapixel) camera. Sometimes when I try to get good closeups, they turn out grainy. It's not a focus problem (I don't think), and I use macro almost exclusively when photoing the tank. I'm generally pretty good with my camera, but for some reason the tank presents a whole different batch of problems.
Here's a good pic:

Here's a grainy pic:

No camera settings were changed. Both were slightly "touched up" with Photoshop. Could it have something to do with lighting, or the angle at which picture is taken (either with respect to the glass or the subject)? Both pictures contain button polyps, they are the same colony of polyps, just in different locations within the tank (thus the difference in color).
Any thoughts?

I would agree - poor lighting or bad angle. I'm sure your resolution is set correctly, at highest... Also check batteries are full strength. Try a shot other then aquarium and see what happens.
