i am getting green hair algae. i purchased two turbo snails and am planning on rotating rock out, replacing it with clean rock. i am also getting deep red algae that looks somewhat like "velvet" on the bottom of the tank. it is a fairly new tank, setup in october 99. any info would be great. thanks

the red stuff is probably cyanobacteria. obviously a lot different than coralline. hopefully its coralline. the hair algae can be and will be eaten quickly by blue legs, scarlets, sally lightfoots, peppermints, emeralds, and mexican turbo snails. the regular turbos won't eat the hair algae. get a protein skimmer and some inverts to handle your algae problems, and keep your stock levels of fish on the lower side. make sure you use the right top off water and do water changes with good quality water. all of these should help
