Bigmac, Does the water come out of the top of the T or does it come out of the bottom of the pipe going down? I was thinking of doing something similar because I get sediment in the sponge and it's difficult to clean out. Also was thinking it would be a little quieter.

I get mine at the local fabric store for my cichlid tank. It's the same stuff.

I have the CS8-1 and the measurements are similar. You'll need more room then that because of the pump. Height is o.k. If you have your return there you don't want it too close. I use a 20 gallon tank for the sump and it seems to work fine.
