I've had a piece in mine since i started up. I used it as a piece base rock and buried it under live rock, i personally think it's to dense to become live as some of the porous rock that we use,but it's full of holes so i figured the fish and inverts might get some use of it.
Clean the filter pads in the water that is in the canister and then rinse the sediment out and you shouldn't have any nitrate problems. Keeping a canister clean is very important.
