I agree with wester on the protien build up, eventually the skimmer would get it but adding a wet dry would skim the water off the top as well as improve the water quality, or cut the feeding back a bit
Did you rinse the home depot sand really good? it will run your ph really high for a long time the ph changes could cause fish death. the high ph could also kill live rock and live sand thus explaining high amonia levels, did your live rock start growing white spots on them? To fix the problem...
Will a chocolate chip starfish destroy live rock critters ,anenomies, and or corals, if so can i put him in my fish only tank with a stars and stripes puffer, zebra eel, fox face,blue hippo tang, 2 clowns?
My guy at the pet store has 120 gal reef set up with only one oarnge spot , he sais its all that tank needs to keep the sand looking the way it does he did say that you need a good bit of sand to keep him happy so id say yes good cleaner for reef

My fox face will eat flake, krill (frozen) squid (frozen) . seems to not be a picky eater, really likes the seaweed sheets excellent coloration after eating it
