    Snails & Hermits

I am beginning to believe it... but they do such a nice job on the algae, I guess I am willing to look the other way (assuming all else is ok). I do have a larger Mexican Turbo snail they don't seem to touch.

    Snails & Hermits

Honestly, I can say I simply floated them... BUT, that's what was recommended by swf.com. The fish on the otherhand, were very diligently drip acclimated as you suggested (and as was recommended by swf.com). Still, why am I losing the snails now? (It's nearly three weeks since introduction.)...

    Snails & Hermits

A few weeks ago I added a cleaning crew to my 30g. They have done a FABULOUS job on cleaning up the hair algae off the LR. I have also noticed that the blue-legged hermits LOVE to stalk and kill the snails. Also, I noticed many of the snails died (or were dead) shortly after I put them in the...

    Water changes

I have the same question. What do the rest of you do? Do you recommend cleaning the detrice from the live sand or is this really 'harmful' to the bacteria colonies?? I'm like wingzfan; makes me feel good to see all that cloudy muck travel into the bucket.

    DIY 120 reef build......

Two simple questions: 1) Why did you only paint one side of your tank (the left side as you look at it from the front)? (...because it is up against a wall??) and 2) Why the 'L' in your stand? (...same reason and it is required for the sump/fuge??) The set-up looks great by the way...

    Proper QT

Thanks. That certainly sounds doable. Anyone else?

    Proper QT

Many of you recommend having a QT in addition to your DT. Makes sense (although more work and expense). Question: How many of you have a QT? What size? What equipment? What is in your QT re: substrate, LR, etc.? Where is it in relationship to your DT? What kind of maintainence is...

fish, inverts, or corals staight from the sea

lol...they have ways to hide. But I guess I'm not exactly changing minds here so go for it! More power to you

    Noob here...

I actually have a very similar setup (34g Red Sea Max) and about the same age since set-up and am experiencing the same cyano. I can attest (thanks to the recommendations by others on this bb) that limiting the light will make a big difference on the cyano. I have reduced my lighting to ~7hrs...

    animal abuse

As we are essentially at the top of the food chain because of our brains, let's us them. "Culture" does NOT excuse the torturing or abusing of life (no matter whether it is animal or human). We have the responsibility to be stewards of our environment both big (the world) and small (our reef...

    Poll: which one??

Hmmm...interesting discussion. I have found that if you want to instantly endear observers to your tank setup, place a true perc in your tank. They are instantly recognizable and appreciated by people who have no fancy for aquaculture. They draw people in and they begin to ask questions about...

    A Real Basic Question

Thanks for your help. I will play with the bubbles and see if I can fine tune it.

    A Real Basic Question

Gottcha. That makes (obvious) sense. Yogosio, so what I should be collecting in the cup is dry, not wet if I have my bubbles set correctly?

    A Real Basic Question

I guess I am confused. I thought one of the jobs of the PS was to remove any excessive proteins (from overfeeding etc.)? My system must be different than yours as it flows through a mechanical sponge filter first and any excess food would be trapped by this before making it to the PS anyway...

    A Real Basic Question

Yogoshio, I dump the cup once a day yet my cup doesn't "runneth over" (with disolved proteins) only the foam. Still, I only want the foam up the neck and not into the actual collection cup?

    A Real Basic Question

MiaHeatLvr, Why do some turn off the PS when feeding? It doesn't affect flow (At least mine doesn't.) What is the reason to do this...?

    A Real Basic Question

Sounds like most of you recommend 24/7 or at least overnight. Will do. What is the best setting for the air bubbles in the skimmer. Do you want it foaming just over the top into the collection cup? (That's what mine is doing now.)

    A Real Basic Question

O.K. I am about to demonstrate my 'newbie' side. How often do you run your PS? All day everyday? PRN? A few hours a day? I seem to be getting varied answers. What do you do?

    Help 'exposing' an anemone

Thanks for that advice and information. I know, I am being impatient. So far, it seems to be perfectly happy hanging horizontally. Does anyone have a left-handed silversides-shifting anemone feeder?
