Black Insert Help for my 65?

If the tank is glass and your insert is acrylic, silicone won't stick to acrylic, so you won't be able to make an in-tank sump. You could get a piece of glass and have a notch cut in one corner for the overflow and then silicone it in with black silicone and paint the inside of the glass with...

I totally get it. I am kinda in limbo with my tank right now too.

    Algae-ridden tank reboot

A 30g sump for a 55g is a bit overkill. If you don't have enough flow through the sump, you might not be doing your tank any favors. They make acrylic tanks that are 16-18 gallons that fit inside a 55g stand that already have filter sock inserts and other benefits.

    Algae-ridden tank reboot

An algae scrubber would do wonders, but sometimes it's simply not an option, especially for sumpless tanks.

    Floor Support

I'd personally use the 4x4 as upright supports and use 2x6 or 2x8 cross beams, doubled up for supports. Depending on if you are putting it under an above ground house or in a basement, I might also secure the 4x4 to a concrete block or pour a small foundation for it first.

silverado61. Rebuilding my 72g bow front and stand.

Looks like you are having a lot of fun. I've been seeing people stain their base rock with purple PVC primer and painting on with various reds and purple's with non-toxic acrylic paints. You know, if you can't wait.

    Algae-ridden tank reboot

Oh, and if you aren't doing so already, only use distilled or reverse osmosis deionized water for your top off. Tap water has too many total dissolved solids.

    Algae-ridden tank reboot

Algae is fairly easy to fix. Nitrate is a limiting factor in saltwater ecosystems - to to prevent new algae from growing, you have to limit Nitrate in the system. Water changes help, but a nitrate and phosphate absorbing media (in the right amount) will prevent new growth once you remove the...

    I need advice ASAP!

Any ceramic biomedia would be much more porous than live rock rubble. Rubble is much cheaper though. Ceramic media can come in forms that easily dissolve, like bright well aquatic brand - id stay away from media that you have to put in a bag. There was a booth at MACNA this year - I think it...

    HOLY MEXICO!!!!!!

Yep. Mexican turbos will plough through some algae and your corals, knocking over corals and rocks. Good find for a big tank.

    5g reef

I totalled up all the equipment that I want to buy for my 55g tank and it's over $2500. I went with just the basics and it's still over $1250. Dang it. Why does this hobby have to be so darn expensive??? I'm trying to gear up to start a water filtration company and I'm having to heavily invest...

    5g reef

I wish I had an extra room in my house to do it. Sadly, I do not. I'm thinking about reusing my 55g and drilling it, restaining the stand and putting it in the living room. Almost have enough to put new floors down. Might be a couple more weeks.

    5g reef

I don't really like the projects, but any step I can take in the direction of getting a larger tank in my home is a step in the right direction. I have a 55g tank stand with a 48x13" base. I'm thinking about ordering a rimless 45g long and just reusing the stand. Otherwise, I could order a...

    5g reef

Just finished painting the living room. Now all I have to do is switch from this horrible carpet to a nicer vinyl flooring before I can put my new tank in place. Man, this is going smoothly. I have a 55g tank stand that is gorgeous. I just wish the tank wasn't tempered. I'm still fond of the...

    5g reef

Painting the livingroom, the hallway and part of the kitchen tonight. Finishing up tomorrow. Next comes new flooring in the living room. Probably will be a couple of weeks until then. Might go ahead and order the tank and build a stand in the mean time.

    5g reef

So, I have just cleared the purchase with the other half and I've planned out the space to put it. I'm going for an innovative marine fusion 20g. I cleaned up my 5g pico, balanced the parameters and I've been feeding phyto and amino acids every other other day. The corals have bloomed. Now...
