Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

What am I speaking Swahili? I appreciate the response, Silverado, but I've been doing this since the 70's and I've had a protein skimmer for 10 years. This is definitely not New Baby Syndrome. Let me go over this again, point by point. 1. The skimmer was working fine. It was perfectly dialed in...

Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

No, I'm not getting 3-4 cups a day of skimmate, I'm getting enough that I am emptying the cup just in case the water level rises and washes it all back into the skimmer. There's less than 1/4" of liquid in the cup when I'm emptying it. In fact I rarely get 1/2" of liquid in the cup before the...

Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

It's dark green but not a lot of solids. Again, it's not the skimmer's ability to remove skimmate that's my problem, it's the fact that the water level lowers and raises by up to 5" even after hours of working properly.

Will a Queen Angel get its adult...ah just read the post!!!

ok so I'll keep feeding angel formula along with mysis and seaweed and hope for the best. There's enough live sponge to last years so...

Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

I actually have to empty it 3-4 times a day, in case it starts overflowing, so the skimmate doesn't get washed back into the sump.

Will a Queen Angel get its adult...ah just read the post!!!

Well, I am feeding them Angel formula cubes, plus I've got plenty of live sponge in the tank. Maybe that will help. Thanks. Anybody else?

Will a Queen Angel get its adult...ah just read the post!!!

I almost put the entire post into my title. Anyway, I have had a Queen Angel in my tank for 3 months. He hasn't changed much in appearance so I was wondering if a Queen Angel in captivity will eventually get its adult coloration. This isn't it but it looks like this Angel: Will it ever look...

180 gal. It came with air tight covers. I thought I was supposed to keep them closed. 18 fish would beg to disagree. Only survivors were the queen, two yellow tangs and various damsels.

Thanks. This is nothing. You should have seen it before the carbon dioxide catastrophe.

Gorgeous Adult Majestic Angel appetite weak

Hey, since you've been so helpful here's a video of the two new additions. As you can see they're making a bit of a mess with my aquascaping. I don't want to upset them so I won't be sticking my hands in there for a few more days to straighten things up. Sorry about the music!

Gorgeous Adult Majestic Angel appetite weak

Funny how my threads always end up as private conversations ;-) I've created a monster here. Now he won't stop eating. He took a humongous poop and proceeded to re-eat most of it. He's ravenous!

Update. Just dropped some new life spectrum pellets into the tank and he darted out of the back and is eatin' like a fool. This case is closed!

Well the majestic is picking at things floating in the water and actually ate a pellet laying at the bottom of the tank so its a matter of any moment now.

Seriously! You never know from one fish to the next what they're behavior is gonna be like.

But the Blue Face is already coming up to me expecting to eat. And by hiding I mean, I can walk up to the tank and the Majestic won't react. But if I put food in the tank, even if he's unaware, as soon as he sees the food he goes into the back and hides. I've seen this in other fish as well. I...

Smaller place, bigger tank...My 200DD build

I've also read that they do great, although my own emerald crab was the first to go, while the rest of the CUC I bought at the same time are still around and growing (in size, not population).

Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

Thanks for the response but I don't think you're getting my problem. It's not that it sometimes skims a lot and sometimes a little, it's the wild fluctuation in the water level. It's 6:45 a.m. as I type this. Last night before I went to bed I checked and the water level was just a bit high, the...

Oh yeah, this is what I wanted to ask. Is it a bad sign when a fish swims away from food? Like when you put mysis into the tank and the fish swims away and hides?

They feed a combination of my sis and chopped up seaweed. Neither fish was eating at the store ( I imagine they weren't happy in such small tanks) but they both looked so healthy and were calmly swimming I figured I'd take a chance. Like I said the blue face adjusted right away and eats...
