    Back to basics- 29g adventure

So since I don't have a director for the Hydra light, I've been leaving the lights on at 40% for about 16 hours per day. There is a little algae starting to develop. Maybe one day soon I will get it, but for now I'm working on another project. Another water change scheduled for this evening...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Another water change scheduled for tomorrow. Seeing growth on some frags that were damaged from neglect. I'm happy with the progress I am making. --- I decided to start a taxidermy studio to do extra side work. Gonna be mounting..... Drum roll.... Fish. :)

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Bang Guy, no, I've done a weekly test. I dosed on a Sunday and tested and dosed the next Sunday and found an 80ppm ca drop over 6.5 days. So I have been dosing around 20ppm Ca per day and its been level this past Sunday. I will be testing again this Sunday to be sure, as long as the corals are...

I'll try to get some pics up when I can. No promises. It's just easier to keep a tank journal on here without the pics, since I have to use photobucket as an intermediary.

Apparently a four gallon water change in a 29g tank every other day wasn't keeping up with the calcium and alkalinity demand with that salt mix. I've been having to manually dose to keep my levels up.

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

So the good news is that with the new LED light, I am seeing some pretty awesome growth on my SPS corals. The most interesting part that I have seen is that the brown algae from the last light I was using is going away, but now I am seeing traces of hair algae on the sandbed. I'm going to siphon...

Water Testing Tips - What Test Kit to Use???

I've used seachem for calcium and alkalinity and magnesium in the past. The magnesium test kit was complicated but accurate. I have found that the API test kits for calcium and alkalinity are actually pretty accurate and prefer API for those two tests over using seachems syringes. If you are...

    is a protien skimmer needed?

Reef octopus makes great skimmers. So do Skimz and aquamaxx

Goodness, I thought the new reef salt would keep my calcium and alkalinity levels up where they need to be, but apparently they aren't. Calcium is at 380ppm and alkalinity is sitting at 6dKH. Apparently I need to keep manually dosing the tank to make sure its meeting its requirements. I'll...

    is a protien skimmer needed?

I don't have a skimmer on my 29g SPS dominated tank. Just regular water changes.

    is a protien skimmer needed?

I'd also like to add that a 55g is pretty tall for a sump, so when you build your stand, I suggest building it tall so you have enough clearance to work in there.

    Nitrates

Absorbs nitrates, organic debris, copper, heavy metals, etc. Polishes the water. It will change different colors depending on what is present in the system.

    Nitrates

I run GFO in my systems about 90% of the time and I change the media out about once every 90 days. Occasionally I run the pump wide open so any organic debris will be flushed out. GFO will kill off macroalgae. GFO absorbs phosphates, not nitrates, and your having a nitrate issue. I think I...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Im going to buy another jebao rw4 pump. I think two will be great, I think. Just seems like there needs to be just a little more flow. This morning I did a four gallon water change with reef crystals reef salt. I still have yet to test my water for calcium and alkalinity. I think I will do...
