    thinking of quitting, everything

You don't know that. Lots of folks like those mean/ugly/gimpy (I don't know what's wrong with the critter in question) fish. To stay in a hobby you no longer have an interest in makes no sense. If however the whole reason you are dissatisfied is because of said fish... it is after it's all said...

    thinking of quitting, everything

Almost any fish store will take a fish for free. Again...keep your equipment and tank in storage if you get out...just to be really sure of what you want.

    thinking of quitting, everything

There are 5 stages in keeping a SW tank.. Stage # 1... I got all my equipment and I just can't wait to get it cycled, I'm so excited! Stage # 2... I have my critters, and I need help because I have to tweak it to get it the way I want. Stage # 3... It's perfect, I have all my critters and...

    Coral dying?

All corals are stressed when you first get them, some may take up top two weeks to bloom. Do you run carbon? Corals have chemical wars, if the coral is down stream of a more aggressive type, that could be one reason. Also leathers like good strong water flow to help them shed.

    Freshwater to saltwater

Unless the tank is nasty, you really don't have to do anything. I gave away my freshwater fish to the pet store. When I switched, I just removed the gravel...put in crushed coral (have since changed to sand). Then rinsed my filter, changed the media...the white gravel stuff had to go, I put new...

    Newbie help. please.

Hi, Crushed coral isn't the end of the world, lots of people have it. You might have to work a little harder to keep it clean... no sand sifters for you...LOL. As for the damsels dying, the water circulation (most likely) or perhaps their aggression toward each other played a part, if the...

    Newbie help. please.

Hello, As to WHY your fish died... if you were using the damsels to cycle the tank, then it wasn't cycled yet before you added the two fish, fish die in uncycled tanks, that's why we cycle first. Add the fact you didn't have good circulation by using a power head, the fish died. To cycle with...

    Newbie help. please.

Hello, Welcome to the site! First...Consider the loss of the damsels a blessing. They are cheap for a reason, they may be beautiful, but are so aggressive they will kill any other fish in the tank less timid then themselves, including each other, and when mature are known to draw blood when...

    Nitrate levels

I have two sitting in the garage, I no longer need them, and put them on Craigs list to sell them...Macroalgae not only takes care of nitrates, but phosphates, and any ammonia too. The Aquaripure filters do work awesome to bring down the nitrates to a beautiful fat 0 within a month. However...

How long do you store SW before using it?

Right after seeing your post...I went on-line to Foster and Smith...they have detailed instructions on stuff they sell. The instructions say exactly what you have pictured..... EXCEPT the little detail of not mixing for more then 4 hours. Verrry interesting. I wonder if it means without aeration...

How long do you store SW before using it?

Hi, The instructions actually say that? I haven't used that brand, but I'm surprised that it would say no longer than 4 hours, are you sure it says that and not...be sure to mix at least 4 hours?

    My own newbie thread

Why buy a bunch of frozen foods from the fish store, to mix it up and refreeze it...isn't refreezing stuff unhealthy? JMO... Once it was frozen you should have just put it in the freezer, and fed the frozen a bit after you thaw and rinse it. If you want your fish to have a variety of foods...buy...

    cloudy tank

The problem with flake food is that it has the highest phosphates. All fish foods have phosphates, but we are able to rinse frozen foods. Phosphates are the main fuel for nuisance algae, and cloudy tanks. Running carbon makes clear water since it absorbs and reduces toxins.

    My own newbie thread

Hi, Putting the goby right into the display with a prayer...is what I did too. Some of the sifters figure out to eat other foods, but we just can't count on it...and it takes time to get them to do it. Time they don't have because of the very make of their bodies, they have to sift the sand to...

    cloudy tank

Hello, Usually bacterial blooms correct themselves. It sucks the oxygen out of the tank, so I think a protein skimmer would help. adding an airline (no stone) might help clear it up as a temporay fix (salt creep is terrible, but not as bad as a constant cloud) If you can set up a refugium, and...

    Just looking for some insight...

Hello, I have a 90g Right now, at the same time you are setting up your display, set up the quarantine tank. I can't stress enough how important that is when you are stocking your tank, to quarantine every new arrival. It not only will prevent disease and parasites, but will also help you pace...

    cloudy tank

Hi, You should not be cleaning your filters once a week...good bacteria builds on it and helps keep the tank stable. Is the cloudy water white or green? Bacterial blooms mean you have too much organic material in the water...do you run a skimmer? This link explains things in better detail...

    My own newbie thread

To be perfectly honest...I never quarantined my Sand sifters, because I knew they couldn't eat in a bare bottomed tank. They have to sift sand and feed on the fauna in it...that's all they eat. Like I said, when frozen Mysis dropped to the bottom, the sand sifter ate it, and learned that it was...
