    Freckles my Potbelly seahorse died.

I think she was just old... but what a bummer. She was my first (Freckles) and last one, I lost the 2 males to some kind of pouch infection a couple of years ago. One female the first year just disappeared, I think the eaters of the dead got to her body, I never found it, and one female died for...

Hey ya'll. lots of questions ans b yes some may be stupid.

Hi, If you want color and don't want to dip into keeping corals...Macroalgae is the answer, and it also feeds on the nasty stuff in the water, keeping it pristine. Check out "GOLF COAST ECOSYSTEMS" the bright reds grow slowest, you have to prune back macroalgae (just pull the extra growth out...

    Sea slugs?

Hi, Sea slugs come on the rock, that's why we call it LIVE rock. You paid dearly for that live rock, the little algae eaters are good guys and nothing to be alarmed about. They come out at night, and no they are nothing fancy, so no colors...LOL...the fancy pretty critters you pay extra for...

Mini Snowstorm in Recently cycled tank

Hi, I'm with you, I wouldn't want to figure out how to dose something not meant for a fish tank either. I use Kent supplements all the time. For Coralline algae, since you have low numbers, you can get some stuff called Purple up. I always just dosed calcium, but Purple up has other stuff in it...

Mini Snowstorm in Recently cycled tank

Hi, You know...I really thought this was just marine snow. Years ago when it happened to me, that's what I was told. It happened off and on throughout the first 2 years and then never happened again. My point is this...it never bothered a thing, and afterwards the corals were super happy. Maybe...

Mini Snowstorm in Recently cycled tank

Hi, There is absolutely nothing wrong with your tank. What you are seeing is "marine snow". It's the natural die off on rocks (not like when rock cures), it happens all the time in the ocean, but only in very new tanks that I know about. The first two years of my tank, I had it all the time...

    Confederate flag controversy

They lost the war...therefore the flag has no value as anything but a chunk of history, it certainly should not fly. I do see the resemblance to the Nazi's ... the KKK, and any other group who hates people because of their race. The Nazi swastika was at one time a holy symbol, they made it into...

    Another Newbie Question

Hi, There are no dumb questions. There is very little good bacteria actually in the water, it's all on the hard surfaces. All you would be doing is dumping nitrates into your new tank, when what you want is ammonia. Ghost feed an invisible fish for a few weeks with some flake food.

    Anemone under bridged rock

MQUOTE="BanditMan15, post: 3570218, member: 298181"]I bet it was gorgeous !! And I think you would miss it esp being in it that long... No TAP water I don't believe I have had tank now 4 months and past 3 have been with RO ...you say you have a ton of macroalgae are you running sump and refugium...

    Anemone under bridged rock

Okay...a Sea hare and a couple of urchins... Please believe me, you have phosphates if you have enough algae for those big eaters to stay alive. Have you checked the TDS of your RO water? Or are you trying to fix your system after using tap water? Triggers do eat the CUC, they are not reef safe...

Yep...that's exactly what they are...and ..LOL.. they get sucked up into everything. I am so like the anemone.

    Anemone under bridged rock

Hi, I calculated my loss by the cost coral of corals to replace what was lost at the size they were when the heater broke...$1500.00 That was a dark, dark day for me. As to what is going wrong with your tank... If you have nuisance algae you will get a false negative reading on phosphates, the...

    Whcih fish best describes you?

LOL... It's an invert, but I think I would identify myself with an anemone. It has no brain, and kills or eats anything it can get hold of, it doesn't go looking for anything...it just sits in it's happy place and waits for life to come to it. It poisons you or stings you to death, if you tangle...

    Anemone under bridged rock

Hi, I keep seahorses now, I kept my light on for 8 to 10 hours when I had my reef... My lighting was Metal halides 2 X 175 with 2 X 95w actinic T5HO. Everyone develops what method works best for them. Keeping the PO4 and NO3 at 0 readings is the goal to keep things looking good. I lost my reef...

different types of algae. Good, bad?

The algae is new, water changes will prevent it from getting worse. I don't know where you are from, but Walmart or any large grocery store sells RO water at the refill station, it isn't as good as having your own unit, but it is heads and shoulders above and better then tap water. 37 cents a...

    Anemone under bridged rock

Hi, I never heard of a HOB sump, the SUMP is gravity fed and stays below the display tank... do you mean a HOB filter, or maybe a HOB refugium? Instead of worrying about the lights...concern yourself with controlling the nutrients. Do more water changes, increase the water flow to that area of...

    Tank intro.

Hi, Welcome to the site! When it comes to SW tanks, whatever works is correct! Unless you have nitrate issues, or algae problems, so I agree with you...why mess with perfection? If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Congratulations on a 29g lasting that long, the smaller the tank, the harder it is...

different types of algae. Good, bad?

Hello, Welcome to the site! If the green just started developing while you were away, and slimy to the touch...it is most likely is the start of hair algae. = BAD The purple on the rock if it developed while you were away, and is slimy to the touch, is most likely Cyanobacteria, not an algae at...
