So my darling little 3 year old dumped a damn near full package of Hikari algae pellets into my sump. By the time I found out they had been in there for awhile, but was able to get about 75% of them out. The rest disenegrated into tiny peices. My skimmer is going crazy and overflowing quickly...

I have a fowlr and a few colonies of mushrooms and like 2 polyps of some sort. The mushrooms are very hardy, and reproduce pretty quickly. I think they would be ideal for you to start with.

After the initial stages, when the aquarium is cycled, diatoms and brown algae should not reappear. If they do, there is something wrong with the water chemistry.

Yes, get a good book, read it, then read it again. Ask questions, take it slow and do t rush things. When you rush things, things go wrong. Think about the set up you want, pre plan the type of livestock you want. You also need to go ahead and plan a qt tank if you want to to do things right...
