Are you using tap water or ro water for top off? Rinsing the frozen food? The frozen has a lot of phosphates so its good to rinse it in a net before putting in the tank. The lights def didn't help with your algae issue.

You could have just done it the good ol fashion way and induce a cycle with live rock and a peice of raw shrimp and ghost feeding. No wasted fish life needed.

The added rock could have caused the ammonia to come up Of there was any for off at all. Did you make sure your cycle completed? Your ammmonia rocketed and came back down? Howd you acclimate fish? Whered you get the fish? All same place? Did you qt the fish? What kind of fish?
