    starting first saltwater tank...

I'd put 2 on it. And a lot of people run chillers due to the hi heat output of intense lighting commonly used in reef tanks. So if you're looking to get into coral then you'll want to make sure that you have sufficient lighting as well. But chillers are expensive and led lighting produces far...

    starting first saltwater tank...

Yes the hang on back filter can be used safely. Not a problem. The penguin 350 is rated for a 50 to 70 gallon tank. I always try to go around double what something is rated for. Id say you want to go the next one up for a 55 gallon. Emperor 400 perhaps? Don't know if you already got it or not...

    Reverse Osmosis Questions

None taken Silverado. I certainly don't know the science behind it. I'm just confident that the water I use now is better than what I used to use. And it's so much more convenient to make your own.

    Reverse Osmosis Questions

Yeah.. just a $20 TDS meter will tell you the amount of total dissolved solids there are in your water. Not that everything in your water is going to be bad but certainly the lower the number the better off your water is going to be. Oh and if your water is treated then you may also have...

starting a 24 or 28 greef with swf and some corals proposed set up and extra filtration

I usually go at a minimum "double" on all of my filtration.. so on a 25 gallon tank provide something that's rated for at least 50 gallons. On my 15 gallon I'm using one rated for 50 gallons and I think it's just right. However the Fluval fx5 looks to be a VERY large canister filter rated for...

    seeding my old live rock

The amount you need probably depends upon the time frame you're wanting to accomplish your goal. I'm using roughly 20% to get mine done. The higher the ratio that faster the spread I'd imagine.

    seeding my old live rock

The top rock is established. It's probably 10 to 15 lbs and I'm using it to seed (as a guess) another 40 lbs. As far as seeding it with just beneficial bacteria I'd image it would take much. But I'm guessing your talking about all the other forms of larger (small life)

    seeding my old live rock

Yeah I just did what you're talking about. It took extra time for my tank to cycle using my old rock due to the debris on and in it.. however I did try cleaning it good first. I have just mixed some new live rock in to seed my old rock. Now that the tank is fully stable and has fish crabs in it...

    Live Mysid shrimp

I found a tiny little shrimp in my 15 gallon... I've never noticed one like this before in any tank I've ever had. It was small and clear and looked like a tiny little ghost shrimp. As I was looking around in the same area I noticed several of them. After looking online I believe they are Mysid...

    Advice needed over all

My clown was trying to host on my green goniopora and the little goni did not like it one bit...lol I had to separate them.

    Advice needed over all

Kenya tree... most mushrooms like a hairy mushroom. But if you're looking for hosting for your clownfish I would recommend an anemone over coral for that. Most anemone's have a pretty high lighting requirement as well though.

    Advice needed over all

No that light will not be sufficient for most corals... if you look at the specs on those lights they have .25 watt leds and a very low par rating. You need like 3 watt led's for most moderate to high lighting need corals. So I'd say if you're wanting to get coral then only attempt very hardy...

    Clownfish keep dying

I didn't see marine velvet on Beth's thread when I looked. May have overlooked it though. I guess if anything I'd merely be guessing though fishkiller. I think one of the only real ways to know would be to have a microscope and know what you're looking for. Lol. That's over my head. A lot of...

    Clownfish keep dying

Oh.. well in its final stages there is a golden brown dusting on the skin which is where it gets its name. But the dusting can be hard to spot and sometimes the fish will die before it even shows any visible signs on the skin. It attacks the gills. I believe the other signs beyond the of the...

    Clownfish keep dying

No I wasn't saying that it was marine velvet I was just responding to Jay asking what is something that can kill quickly.

    How automated is your system?

No automation.. however once I have the time and the money I intend on making my system as fully automated as possible. Not necessarily out of laziness but I'd like to see what can be achieved in this area... and with the way computer tech has gone I'd imagine that what can be automated is only...

    Clownfish keep dying

Marine velvet. Can kill very fast... causes fast respiration and can be hard to see on the fish and can kill before you've even noticed any changes on the skin.. But who knows. Not saying that's it. There are so many different things out there from parasites to bacteria to fungus. Just think...
